Lonhro has downed a
quality field with relative ease to be crowned the Champion Three-Year-Old at tonight's
Australia's Racing Champions Racehorse of the Year. The
John Hawkes trained colt, who is resuming in Sydney on Saturday, polled over 70 percent of
the vote.
The last stride Australian Derby winner Don Eduardo was
next best with 19 votes, just ahead of the dual Group One winner Carnegie Express.
A son of the former champion galloper Octagonal, Lonhro was the only contender in
any division of the awards to have been unbeaten during the season.
Between his win in the Warwick Stakes in August and his
Hobartville Stakes in February, Lonhro had won seven from seven and stakes of over one and
a quarter million dollars.
He is set to resume with Sydney's glamour three-year-old
filly Ha Ha in Saturday's Group Three Missile Stakes in Sydney. Darren Beadman will ride
the rising four-year-old.
Interestingly no female horse polled votes in this award
with the judges overlooking the likes of Magical Miss and Ha Ha.
