Promising
        Victorian stayer Badger's Wood has caused a major upset by winning the award as the Most
        Popular Australian Racehorse at tonight's Australian Racing Champions Night at Crown
        Palladium in Melbourne. 
        Trained at Warrnambool by Bill
        Peake, Badger's Wood firstly surprised most when he was voted as one of the six finalists
        in the award. 
         In a field of finalists which included Cox Plate champion Northerly,
        Cups heroine Ethereal, kiwi queen Sunline, tops three-year-olds Dash for Cash, Mistegic
        and Lonhro, the gelding was a resounding winner. 
        Badger's Wood polled 1331 votes from a
        total of 3655 calls to a voter hotline, some 36.42 percent of the vote. 
        He was 12.2% clear of his nearest rival,
        the dual Group One winning three-year-old Dash for Cash, a member of the Rick Hore-Lacy
        stable.
