No one has dominated at both the training and riding ranks in Australian
history like Maurice McCarten, and tonight his efforts were recognised when he joined four
other former champion trainers by being inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame
        in Melbourne.
Born in New Zealand, Maurice McCarten was an outstanding jockey both at
home and when he moved to Sydney however he was to leave an indelible mark on Australian
        racing as a trainer.
He won the Sydney Premiership four times and trained some of the
nation's most famous horses including the mighty Todman, winner of the inaugural Golden
Slipper and outstanding mare Wenona Girl.
His big race wins included a Melbourne Cup
(Delta), Caulfield Cup, two Cox Plates and three Epsom Handicaps.
        McCarten died in 1971. |
