One of Australia's greatest ever gallopers Manikato tonight sprinted into
the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in Melbourne.
A barrel-chested son of Manihi, the mighty Manikato was the premier
sprinter of his era.
Originally trained by the late Bon Hoysted and then by Bon's brother
Bob, Manikato was a star from the start of his career and displayed his ability season
after season.
He won an amazing five successive William Reid Stakes and four Futurity
Stakes winning 12 Group 1 races in all.
He won 29 of his 47 starts and was second nine times and had career
earnings of more than $1.1 million.
The Group 1 Manikato Stakes, named in his honour is run annually at
Moonee Valley.
