Tony McEvoys great recent run continued in two states today
when he won the listed Vanellus Stakes in Adelaide with Court of Jewels and the Northern
Territory Derby with Young Challenger. Young
Challenger, a colt by the Lindsay Park based siring star Jeune, proved a length to strong
for his rivals in todays $71,000 MGM Grand Darwin NT Derby at Fannie Bay.
The win came after a disappointing run, a start which
people at the track said should have been immediately over looked.
"By all reports his last result was basically put down
to a poor ride," winning trainer Tony McEvoy reported tonight. "Locals from
Darwin said he (Young Challenger) was given no chance in his last run."
His last start unplaced effort in the Darwin Guineas had
followed up an impressive maiden win at Werribee in Victoria.
Part owned by the Linday Park Stud Syndicate, managed by
bloodstock expert Mark Pilkington, Young Challenger proved too classy for the Darwin
Guineas winner Grey Desert (N Paine), while My Tally (D Bates) was third.
Silver Bliss was the best of the unplaced brigade in fourth
place. The Tasmanian Derby winning favourite Moonah Brooke was also among the beaten
gallopers.
McEvoy said the chestnut colt would remain in Darwin in a
tilt at the feature race Northern Territory double.
"Hell run in the Darwin Cup on Monday
week," McEvoy added.
