Some of Victoria's most promising and proven sprinters will clash in
the listed $101,000 Sir John Monash Stakes (1000m), which will be run at Caulfield this
Saturday. Fourteen entries were received for the race
including eight which have won at least $100,000 in stakes.
Heading the line up is the grand John Hawkes trained
sprinter Sports. The gelding has not raced since finishing unplaced in Toledo's Australia
Stakes at Moonee Valley. His fresh record is strong and Hawkes will be hoping he can
continue his premiership charge.
The heavy artillery from the Flemington stables of Brian
Mayfield-Smith are emerging and his pair of talented Rubiton sprinters Prince Rubiton and
Rubitano are both entries.
Another galloper in the
field by the former Horse of the Year Rubiton is the high class filly Ruby Slipper, a
member of the Robbie Laing stable. She has won her past three races in great style and she
looks a great chance at the weight-for-age conditions.
Multiple Group winning sprinter Windigo has been nominated
for the race by trainer Ramon Goldsmith. He is bound to have stripped fitter from his
unplaced first up effort at Flemington recently.
Other interesting entries include the in form Aragonce, a
winner at Moonee Valley on Saturday, the Lee Freedman trained Joie, the recent stakes
winner Calming and the evergreen sprinters Ruthless Tycoon and Regal Shot.
