Former Group
winner Stand by Me has run a gallant second in a Flying Handicap at his home track of Port
Augusta today lugging 65 kilograms. And that was even
after a two and a half kilogram claim from in form apprentice rider Justin Potter.
A member of the Wally Rabig stable, Stand by Me was
originally handicapped with 66.5 kilograms when the weights were released late last week.
Today the Umatilla gelding tried hard under his huge weight
but found the Rubiton gelding Onyx River two lengths too strong. There was an amazing
twelve kilograms between the two.
Interestingly both Umatilla and Rubiton, the sires of the
first and second placegetters in the Rossair Flying Handicap, both stand at leading
Victorian thoroughbred stud, Blue Gum Farm.
Meanwhile, later in the afternoon Gretroby scored a dashing
win in Port Augusta's feature race, the Elders Limited Squatters Cup over 1850 metres. |
