Robert Smerdon's joy with
the jumpers continued at Mornington today when War Abandoned broke through for his first
career win in the Ian Leslie Electrical Maiden Hurdle (2950m). Just over a week ago Smerdon unearthed a potential jumping star of the future
when the Zabeel gelding Zabenz won at his jumping debut in the Trial Hurdle at Flemington.
Although War Abandoned may not reach the lofty heights
expected of his talented stablemate, it was still a good effort to win today.
With Ciaron Maher in the saddle, War Abandoned ($7) proved
much too good for Jet Soon ($31) winning by some eight lengths.
The $21 chance Jon Ledecky was a further four and a half
lengths away in third place.
War Abandoned ploughed through the heavy conditions in
great style stopping the clock at 3 minutes 27.5 seconds.
