Talented Victorian jockey Mark Flaherty is set to return to the
racetrack next month, but not in his home state. After
riding work for Gerald Ryan at his Gold Coast stables the leading heavyweight hoop is
expected to begin his return in Sydney.
Ryan, who had a great deal of success with Flaherty when he
was based in Victoria, said today Flaherty had shedded weight and was looking for a July
return.
"Both he and Simon (Marshall) have been really
focussed on getting back in the saddle," Ryan said on radio this morning.
"Mark's just such a talent," he added. "It's
just a crying shame he has the weight problems."
Ryan, who will be switching his home base from the Gold
Coast to Sydney, said the usual higher weights scale in New South Wales looked ideal for
Flaherty.
The leading interstate trainer also hinted that Marshall is
looking at a return in a "couple of months."
"Simon gave himself about three months to be able to
get back to riding," Ryan said. "He's been up here training and track riding for
me for about a month now."
Marshall has indicated he intends to return to his happy
hunting ground in Melbourne rather than a stint with Flaherty in Sydney.
