| Stewards around
the country have gone on a "suspension spree" with no less than 17 jockeys being
suspended around Australia. Riders at Eagle
Farm, Flemington, Gold Coast and Jandowae all copped suspensions after being charged with
careless riding or incurring weight penalties. A number of others were also fined for
weight and riding offences.
With the spotlight on Queensland racing this weekend with the
running of the Stradbroke Handicap, Brisbane Cup, The TJ Smith and The Queensland Derby,
stewards there were ruthless handing out eleven bans.
Three jockeys were outed on Stradbroke Handicap day on
Saturday, while eight were banned on Brisbane Cup day yesterday. Among those outed
yesterday included the weekend's Group One winning hoops Danny Nikolic and Brett Prebble.
They joined fellow Victorian jockeys Rhys McLeod and Vincent Caddy to be suspended in
Brisbane. Kerrin McEvoy was originally charged with careless riding in the Brisbane Cup
but the charge was not sustained after the Melbourne Cup winner successfully argued his
case.
