Sheila Laxon, the first female trainer to win a Melbourne Cup, has
been honoured in the New Zealand Queen's Birthday Honours List which was issued there
today. Laxon, who's mare Ethereal won the Caulfield
and Melbourne Cup double last year, was honoured for her sporting achievements.
Welsh born Laxon was named on Officer of the New Zealand
Order of Merit.
Ethereal became the first horse since the Horse of the Year
Might and Power to win the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double during the Melbourne Spring
Carnival. She was the first mare to do the double since Let's Elope.
As well as being the first female trainer to win the
Melbourne Cup, Australia's most famous and richest horse race, she was the second ever
trainer (behind England's Lady Herries) to win the Caulfield Cup.
