John Hawkes' son and Melbourne foreman Wayne says
the stable is not chasing a Victorian premiership despite the fact the Hawkes team is just
four wins behind ladder leader Lee Freedman. Incredibly
Freedman did not have any runners at either Saturday's Sandown meeting or yesterday's
"home" meet at Caulfield. Hawkes was also without a runner at Caulfield.
A day earlier Hawkes had three runners, two of which were
impressive winners.
Despite closing Freedman's premiership buffer to just four
winners Hawkes junior says the stable isn't focussed on winning the training title.
"It's not an issue," Hawkes said of the Melbourne
premiership. "If it happens then that's good but we are about just winning as many
races as possible."
On Saturday the famous cerise colours of Jack and Bob
Ingham were carried to victory by both Domine and Philotimo.
Hawkes now has 48 winners as compared to Freedman's tally
of 52. The third placed trainer is Tony McEvoy with 41. There is then a 16 win gap back to
David Hall and Michael Moroney. |
