Local lady
trainer Heather Frew has sent out a warning to rival trainers in tomorrow's Mount Gambier
Gold Cup (2400m) after the narrow win of her mare Staff Party in yesterday's Carlton
Draught Blue Lake Handicap (2050m). Staff
Party, a five-year-old mare by Prince Salieri, started at 8/1 in yesterday's race but
proved too strong scrambling home to down another local Super Sunrise by a long neck. The
Strathalbyn visitor Inflewinzer was a head further back in third place.
All three placegetters in yesterday's feature on the first
day of the three day carnival will back up in Friday's feature event - the jewel of the
South Eastern racing calendar.
The win also extended the fine run of Strathalbyn based
apprentice rider Justin Potter. The talented horseman has been enjoying a great run of
late with his "boss" Brian Mueller.
Potter will remain in the saddle of the five-year-old mare in
the Gold Cup, but the third placegetter will be the subject of a signficant riding change.
Brilliant former kiwi and current Melbourne based rider Greg
Childs will replace apprentice Chris Bryant aboard Inflewinzer in tomorrow's feature.
In a further boost to the chance of Staff Party is the fact
the mare will jump from barrier one in the Cup, whereas many of her main rivals have
tricky outside draws at the unique track. |
