Popular Melbourne jockey Stephen Baster scored his fifth Group One win when
he won last Monday's smoke-free Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville. The A Train, a member of the Cliff Brown stable, followed in the footsteps of
Mookta, Lord Luskin and Rubitano who have won at racing's highest level for Baster.
"I've won a couple of Newmarket Handicaps (Mookta and
Rubitano this year), an Oakleigh Plate (Mookta) and a VicHealth Cup with Lord
Luskin," an ever smiling Baster said.
Baster was praised by connections of The A Train for giving
that horse a good run from an outside barrier during the two mile Cup.
The Adelaide Cup wasn't the only feature race Baster won in
the South Australian capital over their biggest race weekend.
He also guided the Graeme Rogerson
trained filly Lashed to another incredible victory in the smoke-free Sires' Produce
Stakes.
Baster predicts a bright future for the daughter of Encosta
de Lago.
"She's obviously loaded with ability," Baster said
after the win which he described as "freakish."
With Baster having collected both Group races sponsored by
the SA Government under the "smoke-free" banner you could think Baster could
soon be known as "smoke-free Stephen."
Tomorrow Baster returns to Melbourne with some good rides at
the Moonee Valley meeting. Among his leading chances are Magnus Bay in the second,
Donvamore in the fourth and Western Waters in the last. |
