Here are some
facts and some interesting trivia on the Group One Honda Goodwood Handicap.
The 2002 running of the race will be held at Morphettville on Saturday.
It was first run in 1881 and won by D.O.D.
Walter Hickenbotham trained five winners between 1901 and
1910.
Stallion, St Anton sired five winners between 1921 and 1931.
Wyndam Hill Smith, who's family association with racing is
bound nationwide by key industry sponsor Yalumba, owned three winners - Galway Pipe
(1947), Denhoti (1948) and Cellarman (1949).
John Letts rode five winners between 1961 and 1984.
This is the first year that Honda have sponsored the Goodwood
Handicap.
The inaugural winner D.O.D. scored at odds of 833/1. At the
time it was an Australasian record.
The first back to back winners was MusketBelle (1911 and
1912).
Last year the race was won by the Myles Plumb trained Keeper.
He has since been retired to stand at Cambridge Stud in New Zealand.
The only previous winner of the race running this year is the
Tony Vasil trained Marstic.
The last New Zealand bred winner of the race was the Jim
Houlahan trained Centisle.
Spectrum is the last mare to win the race. A member of the
George Hanlon stable she scored in 1998.
Ambala, another mare, is the last local trained winner in
1994. She won at cricket score odds for local hoop Jason Holder.
The race record is held by Spectrum. When she won the clock
was stopped at 1 minute 8.3 seconds.
Since metric weights were introduced in 1974, the weight
carrying record is held by Bold Jet. In 1983 he carried 56 kilograms to victory.
