Saturday's Malaysia Airlines South Australian Derby winner Pantani has been
confirmed as a started in next week's smoke-free Adelaide Cup.
Pantani's trainer Robbie Laing said the
three-year-old had pulled up well from his narrow win in the Derby and would head toward
the Cup which will be run next Monday at Morphettville.
On Saturday the VRC St Leger placegetter
shot the front at the top of the Morphettville straight and then under hard riding from
Danny Nikolic he held out a late challenge by the fellow grey galloper Silver Baron.
A colt by Pentire, Pantani will be
attempting to follow in the footsteps of classy stayer The Hind who finished third in the
SA Derby before backing up to win the Adelaide Cup in 1998.
Other three-year-olds to have won the
Adelaide Cup since 1950 include Scrupulous, Our Pompeii, Subzero, Just a Dash, Tavel,
Laelia, Wine Taster, Rain Lover, Storm Glow and Star Aim. |
