Brilliant Newcastle filly Lovely Jubly has made a
triumphant return to the racetrack when she scored a fast finishing final stride win in
this afternoon's $201,100 Red Cross Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben in Brisbane. The tough filly by first season siring sensation Lion Hunter had to
call on all of her class to beat the short priced favourite Yell, who was a last start
runaway stakes winner in Brisbane.
With new jockey Brett Prebble throwing everything at her
the David Throsby trained two-year-old responded in fantastic style, and was able to grab
Yell a stride before the post.
In a truly run race Yell looked as though he
almost had the Group Three event all parcelled up when he skipped clear at the top of the
straight and still held a clear break at the 200 metre mark. But from that point on the
star filly rose to the occasion, storming home to win by a mere half head.
What initially looked to be a two horse race turned out
exactly that way. While a half head separated Lovely Jubly and Yell, there was some seven
lengths back to the third placegetter, the Clarry Conners trained Danehill filly Verstak.
Today was Lovely Jubly's first start since scoring a length
win over Chuckle in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast in January. The filly
was fitted up for today's race with two barrier trials at Newcastle including a 13 length
win on April 22 on a dead track.
The filly's record now stands at five starts for three wins
and a second placing and prizemoney close to three quarters of a million dollars. |
