Former Perth apprentice Mark Zahra notched up his
first metropolitan treble when the Tony McEvoy trained El Nino scored a great win in the
May Sprint (1200m) at Caulfield this afternoon. Already
the 19-year-old had ridden "four or five" trebles at tracks in the country and
provinicial area but today was his maiden city trio of wins.
"It's certainly been a great day," Zahra said.
Zahra began riding in Perth three years ago and rode his
first ever winner at Geraldton in Western Australia.
Despite his great haul today where earlier wins came thanks
to The Fatz for Michael Moroney and Russian Caravan for Tony McEvoy, three winners is not
Zahra's best winning day.
"I rode for winners once at Wangaratta one day,"
Zahra said. At that time he was enjoying a six month stint with leading country Victorian
trainer Brian Cox.
Zahra wan't overly confident coming to Caulfield today.
"I thought I had some good chances, but they were
about 8 or 9/1 chances," he said. "So it was either going to turn out to be a
good or bad day."
