Victorian sprinter Kapuna has earned himself a crack at the Group One
Goodwood Handicap in Adelaide after an impressive win at Flemington yesterday. A member of the Colin Little stable, Kapuna was aimed at the Goodwood last
year but failed to get a run.
"He was balloted out of the Goodwood last year,"
Little said. "We knew he basically had to win today to make sure he would get into
the field."
Kapuna had not won a race since last year's Goodwood,
therefore the pressure was well and truly on at Flemington.
A five-year-old gelding by Pirate Army, Kapuna is a chance of
making an earlier appearance than the Goodwood in Adelaide.
"We'll assess where he's at and he could run in the lead
up race (the Honda Stakes) in Adelaide before the Goodwood," Little said. "He
wouldn't be suited at the 1000 metres but he could need the hit out.
"I think he's a better horse now at 1200 metres or even
better suited over 1400 metres so the trip won't really suit," he added.
Little said he wasn't so confident on Kapuna's chances when
the track deteriorated during the day with consistent rain.
"I was a bit apprehensive about the track," Little
said after the win of his "nice big strong horse".
In yesterday's race Kapuna raced just off the pace in the
Kokoda Track Handicap (1200m) before coming with a well timed run to score.
At the post Kapuna just proved a little too strong for the
Andrew Findlay mount Slipstream, while Oregon Seal was third.
