Leading
trainers from around Australia and New Zealand are among those who have nominated
promising members of their stable for the first day of the Adelaide Cup Carnival on
Saturday. Gai Waterhouse, John Hawkes, Colin
Alderson, Colin Jillings, Tony McEvoy, Peter Moody, Graeme Rogerson, Bart Cummings,
Michael Moroney, Craig Ritchie and Leon Macdonald are among a select group of trainers who
have entered horses for the three feature events at Morphettville this Saturday.
The springboard race to the double Group One Oaks series,
the $100,000 Lakewood Stud Stakes (1800m) has attracted 23 entries.
Among the Lakewood entries are NZ Oaks runner-up Sursum
Corda, Group race performers Gold Lottey, Tully Thunder, Venus Was Her Name, Fortune
Streak and Clothilde, recent Flemington winner Embraceable You and Saturday's Sydney
placegetter Allez France.
The three-year-old event opened to colts and geldings (as
well as fillies), the $100,000 Turfgrass Adelaide Port Adelaide Guineas has 25 entries.
Aside from the fillies who are double engaged the race has attracted the Group performers
Saturday Fever, Berezny, Solitary Soldier, Silver Baron and the talented kiwi (Our) Kazz.
Meanwhile, some promising youngsters are entered for the
listed Yellow Cab Group Plate (formerly Oaklands Plate), a feature event for the
two-year-olds. The race was won last year by Tully Thunder. Two of the more interesting
runners could be two first starters from leading stables. Tony McEvoy has nominated the
Fuji Kiseki filly Carnatic, while John Hawkes has entered Prickly (Strategic-Hedgehog)
after a handy trial effort recently. |
