Former
legendary Hall of Fame trainer Tommy (TJ) Smith would have been watching from the
racetrack in the sky with great pride when his daughter Gai Waterhouse won the Group Two
race run in his honour at Randwick late this afternoon. Waterhouse had two runners in today's $351,400 and former Slipper placegetter
Excellerator was given a great chance of giving Gai a special win, but it was her roughie
Phoenix Park that gunned down Australia's best sprinters in winning.
A field that included Group One winning stars Falvelon,
Spinning Hill and Mistegic was one of the best assempled sprint fields in Australia this
calendar year.
Jockey Brian York was at his very best and the
four-year-old son of Royal Academy proved too strong over the final stages drawing clear
for what turned out to be an effortless win.
The TJ Smith triumph was the first win for Phoenix Park
since he won the Group Three Concorde Stakes at Rosehill in August last year. |
