Victorian
three-year-old Pentastic, who chased home Don Eduardo and Carnegie Express in the AJC
Derby a little over a week ago, is the current favourite for Saturday's $820,000 Sydney
Cup at Randwick. Pentastic is a 9/2 chance in what is
a very open race. He is half a point shorter than the proven New Zealand performer
Armstrong. Gai Waterhouse's Group One winner Dress Circle is next at 6/1.
Others given a decent chance of winning the 3200 metre
staying test include Hail (7/1), Mr. Prudent (8/1), while Asia, Henderson Bay, Homewrecker
and Spirit of Westbury are all quoted at 10/1.
There is more than a 50/50 chance of the winner being a
horse bred outside of Australia. Thirteen of the runners were bred on the other side of
the Tasman, while Karasi was foaled in Ireland.
