In form local trainer Bede Murray has continued
his great run with his two-year-olds when Half Hennessy scored an impressive win in this
afternoon's $150,400 2KY Illawarra Classic at Kembla Grange. Corey Brown had the colt positioned in fourth place early before sweeping up to
the leaders after straightening and then pulling clear over the final stages in the 1200
metre race.
While Murray has already confirmed Victory Vein will be
heading to the Golden Slipper, today's winner won't be running in the rich juvenile event.
"Both today's runners (Half Hennessy and Recruiting)
will head toward the Heroic Championship," Murray said referring to a race restricted
to Inglis Sale Graduates.
In the run to the line in the Illawarra Classic Half
Hennessy, who as his name suggests is by the Group One winner Hennessy, finished too well
for Fiery Venture, one of two Gai Waterhouse runners in the field.
Third home was the Clarry Conners trained Skytripper.
Recruiting, a last start winner of the Inglis Classic in
Melbourne, never looked to be travelling like a winner for top Melbourne jockey Damien
Oliver. The Celtic Swing youngster wound up in fifth place.
