01/03/02 What the Shannon Classic Trainers Say
Tomorrow's $201,000 Shannons Classic (1800m) at Caulfield is shaping as one of the feature races in Australia for the weekend.

Despite today's scratching of Amalfi the race has still attracted the top class performers like Ustinov, Royal Code, Don Eduardo, All Courage, Grey Song and Zarek.

Thanks to the Melbourne Racing Club we are able to give you the "trainer's view" on their respective chances in the rich event tomorrow.

USTINOV - Reg Fleming - Melbourne foreman for Bart Cummings

I am happy with the horse. He still has plenty of improvement to come for later races, but I expect him to run well

ROYAL CODE - David Hall

Very happy with how he's trained on since the last run. The 1800 metres should suit admirably as he is now getting into a distance range where he is more comfortable.

ZAREK - Geni Gillis

Should run a very good race. He is better suited over a little more ground and he finished off his last race very well, so the 1800 metres should suit. His prospects will increase as the races he contests get longer.

ALL COURAGE - Lee Freedman

Trying him over a longer journey is a bit of an experiment. He will gain further fitness from this race and I really think the longer trip will suit.

GREY SONG - Tommy Hughes

He was very disappointing last time. Did a lot of things wrong - sat wide, overraced and laid out. He's in good shape and would need to run up to his Norman Robinson form from the Spring. I've put a ring bit on and if ridden more quietly this time, I'm hopeful he'll run well.

LEATHER LANE - Wayne Hawkes (Melbourne foreman for John Hawkes)

He should run pretty well. Was underdone last Saturday after a seven week break, bit it was always the plan to back up in this race. He'll jump and go forward and should be hard to beat.

DON EDUARDO - Lee Freedman

This is a harder race than last week's Schweppes Cup. This may be a little short, but will keep him on course for his targets in Sydney. Bet that's not to say he can't win on Saturday.

BALLESTEROS - Leon Corstens

We're flying high here. It will give us a good guide as to where we're at with him. You never give up hope, bit I'm only hopeful at best about Saturday.

MANANG - Lee Freedman

I don't expect her to trouble the colts here. She is preparing for the Oaks in Sydney and this race is an important part of her lead up.
