The queen of Australasian racing Sunline will make
her much anticipated return to the racetrack when she runs in a quality packed Group One
Waikato Draught Sprint at Te Rapa on Saturday. In
what will be her final season on the track, the daughter of Desert Sun is being aimed at
some of the region's feature Group One events in her final handful of runs.
On Tuesday morning Sunline is reported to have looked
extremely forward with what was desribed by seasoned racing fans as sensational work at
her home track of Takanini.
The mare's chances of a first up triumph were also boosted
when she drew the inside barrier in the classy line up.
But Sunline isn't expected to get everything her own
way on Saturday with a number of other locals primed to race well.
While the best other performer horse in the race, Ethereal,
is expected to find the race too "nippy" some strong opposition is expected from
the top performers La Bella Dama, Vinaka and Butterscotch.
Vinaka looms as the major stumbling block to Sunline. A
member of the Jim Gibbs stable, the last start winner will be ridden by New Zealand's
premier senior rider Lance O'Sullivan. On the weight-for-age scale Sunline will be giving
Vinaka three kilograms, but will it be enough? Only time will tell.
A field of twelve has accepted for the Group One race over
1400 metres.
