After being crowned the "king of the Adelaide
Cup Carnival" Melbourne based rider Peter Mertens will return to the city of churches
on Saturday to partner Scenic Warrior in the $100,000 Group Three Rawsons Electrical Tokyo
City Cup. Mertens was nearly unbeatable in Adelaide
during the SA Carnival. He won the Adelaide Cup (Apache King), SA Derby (Big Pat) and
Carlton Draught Stakes (Apache King) within ten days.
On Saturday Mertens will be riding the Lee Freedman trained
Scenic Warrior as the two aim for Group glory at Cheltenham Park.
Scenic Warrior has been given 54 kilograms by the
handicapper, five less than his accomplished stablemate Le Zagaletta (59kg). The grey
topweight is now likely to remain in Melbourne.
Twenty seven entries were received for Saturday's Tokyo
City Cup. Former Adelaide Cup winner The Hind makes his return to the track for Tony
McEvoy. Mark Kavanagh has nominated Border Time after his eye catching second on Saturday.
Spice Doll is sure to enjoy the weight drop. After lugging
58 kilos to victory two runs back she is sure to appreciate 51 on Saturday. Last start
Melbourne stakes winner Tears Royal (Grant Dalziel) has 54 kilograms for the 1450 metre
event.
