Kentucky Derby winner
Monarchos has been injured and will be immediately retired to stud. In a statement jointly released by owner John Oxley and trainer John
Ward it was confirmed an injury had meant the entire had raced for the last time.
"Monarchos, winner of the 2001 Kentucky Derby and the
2001 Florida Derby (G1) has been retired due to an injury of the left front medial branch
of the superficial digital flexor tendon."
"This injury was thought to be a rap received during
morning exercise, but later was diagnosed after an ultrasound examination," the
release said.
It was also stated that the horse's future stud plans would
be announced at a later date.
The four-year-old was in training to next run in the
US$500,000 Grade One Donn Handicap in early February. |
