With a sensational win over Cent Home and Hail in the Group One
Thorndon Mile at Trentham on Saturday, Giovana's earnings surpassed the NZ$1 million
barrier. It was another triumph for Carol Marshall,
the owner, trainer and breeder of the mare, which is headed for richers races in Australia
over the autumn.
There was no time for celebration for Marshall however, she
was hard at work helping out Sir Patrick Hogan with his huge Cambridge Stud yearling draft
at the Karaka National Yearling Sales.
Giovana has now won eight races - four of which have been
Group One features. Before the Thorndon Mile she had scored wins in the Queensland Oaks,
Whakanui Stud International Stakes and The Oaks Stud Classic.
Marshall will target the $1.25 million Australia Cup at
Flemington and the $1 million Tancred Stakes in Sydney.
Also heading over the Tasman with the mare will be top kiwi
hoop Peter Johnson. It was Johnson's eighth individual Group One winner and thirteenth
race in total.
"Peter gets on so well with her," said Marshall
when confirming Johnson would be heading to Australia to partner Giovana.
Following her two runs in Australia the mare will be
retired to stud where she will be served by Fusaichi Pegasus toward the end of the year.
