Young West Australian apprentice Casey Dredge has
been suspended for six weeks after his handling of the beaten odds on favourite Golden
Delicious in The Sorrento Handicap (1100m) at Ascot on Saturday. Stewards banned the rider after he elected to stop riding the Made of
Gold filly over the concluding stages and the pair were subsequently grabbed by one of the
outsiders of the field Little Rosary.
Golden Delicious (4/5 fav) skipped clear of her rivals with
about 300 metres to run and the young hoop thought he was "home and hosed," but
to the disgust of favourite punters a 50/1 pop scored by a head in the final few strides.
A smart two-year-old Golden Delicious shot to fame when she
careered away from her rivals in winning the listed Concept Sports Trophy at Moonee Valley
last August.
At her following start she chased home Tully Dane when fifth
in the Group Three HDF McNeil Stakes at Caulfield on September 1.
Golden Delicious (Made of Gold-Barossa Gourmet), a
three-year-old filly is trained by former top jockey Jim Taylor, who now prepares his team
at Maylands.
