The Scotty Seamer show continued this afternoon when he produced a
faultless riding display to land the Group One Armstrong Jones New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at
Trentham today. Not content with already having
ridden five Group One winners this racing season, the part time macadamia farmer from
northern New South Wales, booted home the Donna Logan trained Vapour Trail to Oaks glory.
After giving the filly a sweet run tucked in the front half
of the field, Seamer was able to switch the daughter of Jetball toward the centre of the
track and from that point she always looked the winner.
With Ethereal sent to the paddock after a record breaking
Melbourne Cup win, the Seamer domination was expected to ease until the autumn.
Ease? You've gotta be kidding! In the past month Seamer has
ridden three Group One winners, a Group Three and listed race as well as last weekend's
Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast.
After winning the New Zealand Derby on the Bob Scarborogh bred and
owned youngster Leica Guv, Seamer backed up just a few days later to win the Auckland Cup
on the John Collins trained Maguire.
Also during the New Zealand carnival he partnered La Bella
Dama, a mare whom he teamed up to scored a shock win in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington
on Derby Day, to win the Group Three Queen's Plate at Ellerslie.
Seamer was having his first ride on Vapour Trail today. The
filly had raced right into Oaks contention after scoring a gutsy win in the Group Two
Eight Carat Classic with South African jockey Robert Burke in the saddle.
At her final Oaks lead up run she ran a close second to
Dreamworks over 2000 metres, again at Ellerslie.
Champagne's full sister Sursum Corda sent her value as a
broodmare in an upward direction by her excellent second at big odds. After failing at her
three lead up races at Group Two level, the Jillings and Yuill trained Zabeel filly boxed
home well over the final stages to hold second comfortably.
