Twelve months ago virtual unknown trainer David Throsby came to the
Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale with a dream. Today,
exactly a year to the day she was purchased, a diminutive grey filly by a first season
Queensland based sire realised the dream by winning the $821,450 Conrad Jupiters Magic
Millions Classic.
Throsby along with his wife Jo purchased four yearlings at
last year's sale and as is quite often the case it was the cheapest which has rocketed to
fame with a feature race win.
Offered by Carnation Lodge, the Delaney's Creek based stud
which is fronted by Dan Hayes, Lovely Jubly as she was named was knocked down for just
$36,000.
Indications that the filly was above average were quick to surface.
Throsby said today that the first time the horse was asked to show what she had to offer
she delivered.
"We knew she was above average right fron the start. Her
early trackwork was great and we thought we may have one right out of the box,"
Throsby fondly recalled.
Today under the blazing sun the grey filly, who had already
beaten the boom filly Sunday Joy in Sydney, came with a powerful finishing burst to down
Sunday Joy's stablemate Obsession in the rich Classic.
Many would think that after pocketing one of Australia's
biggest cheques in racing Throsby would be back over the road in the Magic Millions
Complex adding to his tally of two purchases. Despite pocketing nearly $600,000 in
prizemoney the winning owner and trainer won't be in any bidding duels during the
remainder of the sale.
"I have already purchased two yearlings and I haven't got any
plans to get any more tonight or tomorrow," he said.
Among the two purchases was lot 10. This year it wasn't a
diminutive filly, rather a strong chestnut colt who was snapped up by the Broadmeadow
based trainer.
They may have been completely different types, but the two
have one thing in common - Jaboulet. The King of Kings colt which cost Throsby $47,500, is
from the Vice Regal mare who's the dam of Group Two winner Sir Howard and of course
today's heroine Lovely Jubly.
Throsby will no doubt be hoping the last twelve months will
be repeated with Lovely Jubly's little brother. |
