Beautifully bred gelding Speculars jumps record was further
enhanced at Caulfield on Saturday when he scored a dashing win in the Melbourne Oyster Bar
Hurdle (3000m). A gelding by the champion sire
Danehill, Specular is out of the Group One winning kiwi mare Spyglass, a mare who already
had proven herself at stud.
Spyglass, a daughter of Sir Sian, is already the dam of the
Group One winner Iron Horse, ironically a horse who ended his career jumping in provincial
Victoria.
The jumping record of the family gets another chance to be
enhanced as the Tony Rosolini trained Specular is set for more jumping races in the
future.
"Well send him
out now for a week or so in the paddock before setting him for a Hurdle at Moonee Valley
and then the Cup Day Hurdle at Flemington," Rosolini said after yesterdays win.
Specular scored his third win from four jumping starts at
Caulfield, and his only other run was a bottling second to Bold Impulse. That galloper
managed to snatch third in yesterdays race right on the post.
Originally purchased by Caulfield based trainer Colin
Little at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney, Specular is already a stakes
placed performer on the flat.
In fact it was his third placing in last years
Heatherlie Handicap at Caulfield that caught the eye of Rosolini in replays.
"I actually won the race with Prince Benbara and he
(Specular) ran pretty well," Rosolini reflected. So when Specular came up for sale at
a Les Jensen Bloodstock Auction at Moonee Valley, the Mornington based trainer joined the
bidding action, and provided the final bid.
