Tycoon Ruler, a lightly raced colt by Last Tycoon, made it back to
back city wins when he hung on gamely to win the Qantas Handicap at Moonee Valley on
Saturday. Bred, owned and raced by the Marconi family
at Mornington, Tycoon Ruler defied a significant betting drift to score his second
consecutive win.
A start earlier the youngster had downed a handy field down
the straight 1000 metres at Flemington.
The colt is now realising his potential according to
trainer Jim Marconi's son Carlo.
"He's a colt because right from the start we though he
was going to be our next Group One horse," Marconi, who's also a trainer, said on
Saturday.
"It's nice to see him putting everything together on
the track now," he added.
With Nash Rawiller in the saddle the attractive colt shot
clear of his rivals and then was forced to show plenty of fight to hold off the late
challenge of the recent runaway Cranbourne winner Bunreba.
"He has absolutely no luck at his first two starts,"
Marconi added referring to the colts unplaced efforts at Sandown and Moonee Valley.
"We ran into Titanic Jack last start and he got knocked down at least three
times."
Tycoon Ruler is out of the former talented racemare Sweet
Delight, a daughter of Rancho Ruler.
Sweet Delight won many good class races including the
Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley and the Cranbourne Cup.
"With some stamina on his dam side I'd be expecting
him to stretch out to longer trips in the future," Marconi added. "He's a pretty
talented horse."
The colt is by the brilliant Blue Gum Farm based international siring star
Last Tycoon.
A winner of the Breeders' Cup Mile on the track, Last
Tycoon is a beautifully bred son of the champion sire Try My Best.
At stud he is the sire of many top class performers
including Mahogany, O'Reilly, Bigstone, Marju, Ezzoud, Lady Jakeo, Magic of Money, Super
Sheila, Tracy's Element, Lost World, Poliuto, Privilege, Taipan, Knowledge, Tycoon Lil,
Lady of Chad, Monde Bleu, Tychonic and present day star South African Tytola.
Last Tycoon is standing the 2002 breeding season at Blue Gum Farm for the fee of $19,250 (inc GST).
He'll be standing alongside Encosta de Lago, King Charlemagne, Rubiton and Umatilla at the
picturesque property near Euroa.
