What Dubai wants, Dubai normally gets.
This was the case at the Australian Broodmare Sale in
Sydney this afternoon when one of the world's richest men sent representatives to the sale
specifically to buy one horse. That horse was the Group One winning daughter of Scenic,
Piavonic.
The mare who shocked the Moonee Valley crowd last August
when she rolled Sunline in the Group One Manikato Stakes was sold to Tim Boland for
$660,000.
Boland is the Australian bloodstock buyer for Sheikh
Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum, the same man who made headlines with two high priced
purchases at Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale earlier this year.
A seemingly endless pot of money and a determination to buy
was enough for Boland to win out in what was at times a heated bidding dual.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum instructed Boland to
purchase the bay or brown mare when she came into the ring.
"The Sheikh just fell in love with her," Boland
said shortly after the hammer fell.
"She'll stay in Australia, but we're not sure just yet
what stallion she'll go to in the spring," he added.
Piavonic, who won nine races up to 1200 metres, is by the
Group One winning siring sensation Scenic. At stud Scenic is also the sire of such top
performers as Universal Prince, Episode, Blevic, Shame, Lochrae and Lord Essex.
She is out of the four time winning and Group race
runner-up Piave Girl, a daughter of Brave Salute.
In her first season at stud Piavonic, who was Tony Noonan's
first Group One winner, was in foal to the Kentucky Derby champion Fusaichi Pegasus.
