The full sister to
Melbourne Cup winner Brew and Group Two winner Bubble has sold for $750,000 during a
frantic period of selling during the second session of the Australian Broodmare Sale in
Sydney. Fly the Flag, who is a daughter of Sir
Tristram, was lucky to be even offered for sale after originally not being in the
catalogue. She was one of nine broodmares in the supplementary catalogue for Arrowfield
Stud.
She was puchased by Baramul Stud, the property owned by
high profile businessman and breeder Gerry Harvey. The mare was in foal to the
international siring sensation Danehill.
A winner at both 1400 and 2200 metres in New Zealand, Fly
the Flag is out of the former champion mare and star international performer Horlicks.
On the track Horlicks won the Mackinnon Stakes in Australia
as well as two runnings each of the DB Draught Classic and Television New Zealand Stakes,
all at Group One level. She also won an Awapuni Gold Cup and Japan Cup in Tokyo. In all
Horlicks won some 17 races and earned connections over $3.2 million.
At stud Horlicks, who is by Three Legs, has produced the
Melbourne Cup winner Brew (nearly $2.4 million) and Avondale Guineas winner Bubble, a mare
who was four times placed at Group One level.
Fly the Flag is also from the family that had produced the
Canterbury Guineas winner Interstellar and the New Zealand Oaks placegetter Fine Design.
The $750,000 sale came just moments after the same price
was offered for the internationally proven broodmare Balletomane. That mare was sold to
Melbourne based bloodstock agent Rob Roulston.
The Australian Broodmare Sale is continuing at the William
Inglis Sales Complex at Randwick. The final session will be held tomorrow. |
