Vapour Trail, a daughter of the former Australian sprinting sensation Jetball,
has been announced as the New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year after a sizzling
campaign for trainer Donna Logan. The Jetball filly
(ex Devil's Lair) finished the ten race series with 34 points, eight points clear of her
        nearest rival Blackrock College.
Blackrock College. a member of the John Wheeler stable, set
up a big early lead in the award after two wins and a third from the first three races in
        the series late last year.
But as is always the case the quality rose to the top when
the big races and run and Vapour Trail surged to the top of the table with some top class
        victories.
The Vapour Trail charge began when she scored a gutsy win
in the Group Two Eight Carat Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Backing up a week later
the Logan filly had no luck when she finished second (to Dreamworks) in the Group Two
Auckland International Airport Royal Stakes, again at Ellerslie on January 2.
With the sensational Scott Seamer in the saddle the Jetball
filly then lined up in New Zealand's premier fillies race, the Group One Armstrong Jones
New Zealand Oaks and she proved to be the best by scoring a comprehensive win over
        Champagne's full sister Sursum Corda.
         At her very next start
Vapour Trail completed a rare double when she won the Group Two Cambridge Stud Sir
Tristram Fillies Classic at Te Rapa last month. In the run to the line she was able to
hold all of the challenges which were headed by Blackrock College and Venus Was Her Name.
Vapour Trail then clinched the title when she finished a
close up third to Sixty Seconds and Venus Was Her Name on track conditions which didn't
suit, thus proving the filly was as consistent as she was classy.
The winning owners of Vapour Trail pocketed a cool $15,000,
while the winning trainer and breeder both scored a $5,000 prize.
Vapour Trail joins an illustious group of New Zealand
fillies that have captured the series. Past winners include the brilliant performers La
Mer, Phillipa Rush, Plume, Lets Score, Nimue, Lady Adgnes, Snap, Tartan Tights, Alacrity,
Tartan Belle, Tycoon Lil, Savannah Success, Sarwatch and Singalong.
The final points table for the 2001-2002 series is
        as follows:
Vapour Trail 34 , Blackrock College 26, Final Destination 12, Venus Was Her Name

winner and multiple Group One winning sire will be standing for $8,000 (inc GST). |
