| An undisclosed Australian
breeder would be rubbing his hands together this afternoon after the sale of his Hennessy
colt for a staggering $525,000 during the third session of the New Zealand Premier
Yearling Sale at Karaka. Sold by Cambridge
based Ascot Farm, the chestnut colt from the lightly raced Irish River mare Romantic River
exceeded most people's expectations when he was knocked down for more than half a million
        dollars.
The colt was destined to be purchased by Hong Kong interests.
The winning buyer was Willie Leung acting for a Hong Kong client, while New Zealand
Bloodstock's International Bloodstock Manager, John Cameron was the underbidder - again
acting for a buyer based in Hong Kong.
Hennessy, a Group One winner of four races in the United
States, is the sire of the world champion two-year-old Johannesburg. His oldest local
progeny are three-year-olds and include Courvoisier, Allez France, Disect and Call Me
        Henry.
The Australian born colt is the current session three sales
topper, although he is expected to be overtaken by the Danehill-Tristalove colt (a full
brother to Viking Ruler) who goes through the ring later today.
The colt (ex Romantic River) was the third Hennessy yearling
to be sold today. Earlier two other colts were sold for $82,500 and $50,000. |
