Royal Randwick Wednesday 3 April 2002: Race 5 Waverley
Handicap 2400m:
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of
Time Signal, D. McLellan stated that the gelding travelled well in the run, however, when
placed under pressure from the 700m did not respond to his riding and was disappointing in
its failure to finish off the race.
RACE 1: Darryl McLellan - Henderson Bay Plate (2yo
Maiden Div.1) 1100m:
Ken's Barbie was slow to begin. Approaching the 1000m
Dansant (A. W. Robinson) shifted in crowding Mr Mondrook, which made contact with
Sintegra. A. Robinson was reminded of his obligation to ensure that he leave runners to
his inside the room to which they are entitled. P. Ferris (Kir Royale) was found guilty of
a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount
to shift in when insufficiently clear of Inatin resulting in that filly having to be
checked and lose its rightful running. P. Ferris' licence to ride in races was suspended
for a period to commence on Sunday 14/4/02 and to expire on Thursday 25/4/02 on which day
he may ride. Passing the 500m the saddle on Inatin slipped to the offside, placing its
rider at a disadvantage. When attempting to improve rounding the home turn Conquest was
restrained from the heels of Danish Thunder and became unbalanced. Approaching the 200m
Sintegra was crowded by Cheeky Katie, which shifted in away from Danish Thunder. In this
incident Sintegra lost some ground.
RACE 2: Wyong Racecourse Function Centre Plate (2yo
Maiden Div.2) 1100m:
Handsome Colours was fractious in the barriers and
reared resulting in its near-fore leg getting caught over the front of the gates. Acting
on veterinary advice the gelding was withdrawn at 12.54pm. Subsequently it was directed
that all bets made on Handsome Colours, including quinella bets incorporating that horse,
be refunded and all bets made with bookmakers be paid less the following deductions in the
dollar on the face value of tickets: traditional win 57¢ and place 27¢, multiple doubles
57¢. Mr B. Killian, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse, was advised that Handsome
Colours must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to its next race start.
During this incident C. Munce sustained an injury to his right elbow and was stood down
from his further engagements. Subsequently, the Stewards approved the following rider
substitutions: S. Moses on Berlosconi in race 7, L. Beasley on Cups Quest in race 8, and
G. Buckley on Priscilla in race 9. Danished and Shaunessy were slow to begin.
RACE 3: Wyong Roo's Country Challenge Finalist Handicap
(Class 1) 1350m:
C. Agnew became indisposed following his ride in this event
and was stood down from his further riding engagement. T. Jones was substituted as the
rider of Yearly in race 6.
RACE 4: Tyrrell's Wines Handicap (Class 6) 1000m:
Near the 500m Bowdan Time, which was inclined to lay in,
struck the running rail and became unbalanced and then laid in for the remainder of the
race. Panonia Prince bled for the second time and will be banned from racing in Australia
forever (AR53A).
RACE 5: Peter Doyle Cellars Plate (3yo & upward
Maiden) 1000m:
Brandy Dreamer, which was fractious in the stalls, and
Beautiful Kate jumped awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination of Brandy Dreamer
revealed no abnormality. When placed under pressure in the straight British Star raced
greenly. Bellastar bled during running and will incur the mandatory 3-month ban from
racing (AR53A).
RACE 6: Aubrey Brown Partners Handicap (Class 1) 1100m:
When questioned regarding his riding tactics on With
Panache, S. Moses stated that the instructions were to ride the mare back with the idea of
With Panache learning to settle. He stated that shortly after the start he was crowded
badly by Sweet Air, which shifted in, and as a result With Panache then overraced. He
stated that it was not until the 600m that With Panache commenced to race truly, however,
rounding the home turn the mare commenced to hang out badly and near the 200m he was
obliged to check off the heels of Sky Can Hurri and Sweet Air. He stated further that once
he shifted to the inside of Sweet Air, although he had clear running to the line, With
Panache continued to hang out badly and he was unable to ride the mare out in his normal
manner. A post-race veterinary examination of With Panache revealed no abnormality. S.
Moses was advised that although he was riding to instructions he should ensure on every
occasion that he places his mounts to their best advantage.
RACE 7: Wyong Rugby League Club Plate (Maiden) 1350m:
In the early stages Canny Fella was inclined to lay in and
near the 1200m got its head up when being restrained from the heels of Spurwood.
Approaching the 400m Spurwood was awkwardly placed on the heels of Rap The Zap and shortly
after was momentarily steadied when racing in restricted room between that gelding and I
Declare. For a short distance entering the straight Mr. Hollywood was held up on the heels
of the tiring Ava Bolli.
RACE 8: Neville McBurney - Henderson Bay Handicap (Class
3) 1600m:
As App. C. Karakatsanis was overweight the Stewards gave
permission for App. S. Pollard to be substituted as the rider of Fire Wood. App.
Karakatsanis was fined $50 (AR120(b)). Perance jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Near the
1200m, when the pace steadied, Total Rush got its head up when being steadied from the
heels of Above All. Cups Quest and Fire Wood, which were following, were hampered in
consequence. When questioned L. Beasley could offer no explanation for the poor
performance of Cups Quest. He stated that after receiving the interference at the 1200m
Cups Quest was under pressure and a beaten horse a long way from home. A post-race
veterinary examination of Cups Quest revealed no abnormality. Trainer Mr P. Perry will be
interviewed regarding the immediate racing future of Cups Quest.
RACE 9: Tooheys Limited Plate (Provincial Class 1 &
Maiden) 1600m:
Great Dink jumped awkwardly and was then crowded by
Gilded Armour, which was taken out abruptly by All About Class. As a result, Gilded Armour
and Great Dink lost considerable ground. Great Dink then veered out abruptly placing its
rider at a disadvantage for a short distance. Shortly after the start Fatima and
Cornersoff were badly crowded between What A Bottler, which shifted out, and Priscilla,
which shifted in. Dance To Budapest, which was following, was inconvenienced in
consequence. Leaving the 200m Priscilla (G. Buckley) shifted out around the heels of
Fatima resulting in Cornersoff being crowded between Priscilla and St. Xavier and having
to be steadied off the heels of Priscilla. G. Buckley was reprimanded. Gospelor hung in
under pressure in the straight and near the 100m bumped St. Xavier. Dance To Budapest was
unable to obtain clear running in the straight and consequently was unable to be tested.
What A Bottler was unable to obtain clear running until inside the 50m. When questioned
regarding Gentle Tom racing more forward today, Ms L. Olsen stated that it was not the
intention of the stable to lead, however, after beginning well from the wide barrier,
rather than be caught wide, she elected to allow Gentle Tom to stride forward and lead.
