Track: GoodRACE 1: Sledmere Handicap
1600m
Passing the 300m Flying Ella experienced some
difficulty when taking a narrow run on the inside of Luxury Ride.
RACE 2: Knave Handicap 1600m
My Tally jumped awkwardly.
Summer Alice was crowded for room at the start between Silver
Duke and Zulu Legend, both of which shifted ground.
Rounding the home turn Summer Alice shifted in,
brushed the running rail and became unbalanced and then was held up before obtaining clear
running near the 100m.
A post-race veterinary examination revealed Zulu Legend,
which weakened in the straight, to be lame in the off-fore leg. Trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse
was advised that if it was the intention to pursue this racing preparation for Zulu
Legend that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to that gelding starting
again.
RACE 3: Rural Fire Service Handicap 1400m
Yoruba was slow to begin.
Wyngrove got its head up when overracing in the
early and middle stages.
Shortly after the start Bond had to be eased when Palladium
Star shifted in.
Passing the 600m Yoruba was briefly crowded for room
by Palladium Star, which shifted in and away from Wyngrove.
He's On Fire and Bond, which were following, were hampered
in consequence.
Bond was held up for a run rounding the home turn.
Yoruba, which had been held up for
a run, shifted out at the entrance to the straight to obtain clear running and in doing so
contacted Palladium Star. He's On Fire, which was
following, was briefly inconvenienced and then passing the 200m had to be steadied when
disappointed for a run to the inside of Forbill.
When questioned regarding Palladium Star being
ridden more forward today, trainer Mr G. Walter stated that in anticipation of a slowly
run race he had instructed App. N. Cumberland that if the horse began well to take
advantage of that and have the gelding racing where it was comfortable.
When questioned regarding the poor performance of Paraway,
which was second up today after a lengthy spell, D. Beasley stated that his mount
travelled keenly in the early and middle stages but nonetheless was disappointing in its
failure to respond to his riding in the straight. Trainer Mr G. Walter stated that in his
opinion the tempo of the race had not suited Paraway as the gelding has performed
best when ridden quietly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Paraway to
have abrasions to both hind fetlocks and a slightly elevated heart rate. Mr Walter
undertook to report on the progress of Paraway in the days subsequent.
Post-race veterinary examinations revealed Yoruba to
have abrasions to both hind bumpers and Wyngrove to have sustained a laceration to
the tongue in running.
RACE 4: San Miguel Challenge Stakes 1000m
Minnie Me jumped awkwardly.
Punch Drunk jumped awkwardly, shifted out and
hampered Supera.
A post-race veterinary examination revealed Punch Drunk sustained
an injury to the off-fore tendon. Trainer Mr D. Oakley was advised that a veterinary
certificate would be required before Punch Drunk is permitted to race again.
B. York (Mistegic) was severely
reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in under pressure passing the 100m resulting
in both Ateates and Calming being hampered when crowded for room.
RACE 5: AJC Convention Centre Handicap 2400m
Approaching the 500m Karlperra shifted out away from
Buster Jones resulting in Josiah being taken wider.
RACE 6: William Inglis Classic 1200m
Choisir was slow to begin.
Al Megdam shifted out at the start and hampered Fuji
Beauty.
Sportsman jumped awkwardly, shifted in and bumped
the hindquarters of Royal Purler.
A short distance later Sportsman was badly crowded
for room between Royal Purler and Desert Money, which
shifted in.
Post-race veterinary examinations revealed Al Megdam,
which weakened in the straight, had sustained minor injuries to the off-hind pastern and Planagram
to be displaying a poor recovery rate and to be mildly dehydrated.
Near the 900m Al Megdam and Sportsman bumped
due to Al Megdam shifting in and away from Pillaging (D. Oliver).
Sportsman and Al Megdam then raced tight
between Royal Purler and Pillaging, which shifted in
slightly. In the incident Royal Purler reacted to the buffeting to its outside and
shifted out abruptly resulting in Sportsman and Al Megdam being taken out
across the heels of Pillaging.
D. Oliver was severely reprimanded and advised that whilst Al
Megdam had commenced the incident by shifting in away from his runner, nonetheless he
shifted in to a point where the runners to his inside were unduly tightened and that he
should leave comfortable racing room for his fellow riders.
RACE 7: Festival of Sydney Welter Handicap 1600m
As B. Pengelly was overweight G. Buckley was substituted as
the rider of Market Link. B. Pengelly was fined $500.
British Buska (D. Beadman) was badly held up for a run
until passing the 200m at which point D. Beadman was obliged to alter course to the inside
of Regal Zero in an endeavour to obtain clear running.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on British
Buska, D. Beadman stated that he had been instructed to have the
gelding positioned just behind the leaders, but more importantly to ensure that the horse
travels comfortably and does not overrace. He added that when the pace was good in the
early stages he was obliged to race further back than had been anticipated in order to get
the gelding to settle.
RACE 8: Bushfire Appeal Handicap 1100m
After all horses were loaded in the barriers the barriers
were prematurely released due to an electrical malfunction. All runners were examined by
the club's veterinary surgeon on return to the starting point and on his advice Al Sakeb,
which was pulled up in the straight after galloping hard, and Sporting Chance,
which was pulled up near the 600m after also galloping hard, were withdrawn at 5.36pm.
Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Al Sakeb and Sporting Chance be
refunded and that all bets with bookmakers be subject to the following deductions from the
face value of tickets: 14¢ win, 13¢ place, 30¢ quinella, 14¢ multiple doubles.
Shanval was very slow to begin.
In the early part of the straight Shanval had
difficulty obtaining a clear run and when improving into a run between Carlyon and Imbali's
Boy was briefly crowded for room between those runners when Imbali's Boy shifted
out.
