Warrnambool (VIC) - Friday 15 March 2002
Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: Out 8 metres entire circuit

Race 1 - 46 DAYS TO CARNIVAL NOVICE HURDLE - 3135 METRES

Simon Ryan, rider of Mighty Macarno stated that he rode the gelding back in the field as this is the gelding's normal racing pattern. Ryan added that after commencing to improve his position near the 1100 metres Mighty Macarno made a faulty jump at the hurdle near the 800 metres and almost fell. He believed that the horse did not feel fluent in its action from that point onwards and for this reason did not ride the gelding out in his normal manner. Patrick Kelly rider of Yaccadale stated that the gelding made a faulty jump near the 1200 metres and then felt sore behind after jumping the next two obstacles and for this reason he eased the gelding out of the race around the home turn. A veterinary examination of the gelding revealed that it had sustained a laceration to its near foreleg.

Race 2 - RYANMOVES MAIDEN PLATE (1) - 1200 METRES

On return to scale S. Vella, rider of Denis weighed in slightly under a half kilogram lighter than his declared weight of 57.5. The Stewards then called for the bridle to be placed in the weigh. Prior to the bridle arriving the stewards reweighed S. Vella and he was found to be within a half kilogram of his declared weight. The Stewards allowed S. Vella half a kilogram under the rules and correct weight was declared. On jumping away Confidence Builder and Denis bumped. Confidence Builder and Denis were then tightened for room between Piping Time and Hong Se Lad which both shifted ground. Rounding the home turn and for the majority of the straight Hong Se Lad was held up when unable to obtain a clear run. Also rounding the home turn Julian raced greenly and approaching the winning post shifted out under pressure.

Pete's Hero was examined at the start by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run. Acting on a report from the starter that End Of Message proved very difficult to load into the starting stalls and as a consequence delayed the start of the race. Stewards notified Mr. N. Phillips, Stable Foreman for Mr. S. Royal, Trainer of the gelding, that End Of Message which had been warned for its bad barrier behaviour at its last start is now suspended from racing until such time as the gelding trials to the satisfaction of the stewards in a trial and at which time it must receive a barrier certificate. Approaching the 1000 metres Beach Day which was hanging in shifted in and brushed Major Big Time. Approaching the 700 metres Zedauring, when racing tight on the inside of Look In The Sun, was then brushed by that gelding, shifted in towards the running rail and had to be checked. Approaching the second last fence Intensive Care and Too Easy were both severely hampered by the riderless Hostler. Also at the second last fence Midnight Smoker made the jump awkwardly shifted out and lost ground. Lord Zenobia, was pulled up near the 600 metres by its rider W. Williams. A veterinary examination of that gelding revealed that it was lame in the off foreleg. Mr. Don Hateley, trainer of the gelding, was notified that he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness for the gelding prior to it starting again. S. Vella added that he thought there was something amiss with the gelding at this stage and further added that in his opinion some sections of the track felt shifty and the gelding did not handle those conditions.
