Victoria Park (SA) - Saturday 24 November 2001
Track: Good
Weather: Fine/Showers
Rail: Normal Position

RACE 1: LEGACY 53RD ANNIVERSAY HANDICAP

A routine swab sample was taken from PREMONISH, winner of the race.

In the early stages of the race TALANTO (D Azis), which had commenced to race keenly, was obliged to steady off the heels of CUDDLING (B Vale), which was inclined to shift ground.

Near the 400 metres TALANTO (D Azis) rolled in, resulting in EURO CONNECTION (S Cahill) shifting away and onto the heels of OTTOBELLO (J Holder).

EURO CONNECTION got its head up when being steadied off the heels of OTTOBELLO.

TALANTO (D Azis) continued to lay in for the remainder of the race.

Near the 200 metres OTTOBELLO (J Holder) shifted in under pressure.

On return to Scale S Cahill, rider of the third placegetter EURO CONNECTION, requested to view the official footage in the straight. After doing so S Cahill lodged an objection against TALANTO being placed second, on the grounds of interference between the 500 and the 400 metres. After taking evidence from both riders, viewing the film and acting on their own observations, Stewards dismissed S Cahill’s objection.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of TALANTO failed to reveal any visible abnormalities.

RACE 2: CUSTOMS AGENCY SERVICES HANDICAP

A routine swab sample was taken from MIGHTY RAJA, winner of the race.

MIGHTY RAJA (D Azis) and CLASSIC ROSE (C Buchiw) jumped away awkwardly.

TERMINUS PRINCE (B Claridge), which was inclined to race greenly in the early stages, shifted in approaching the 700 metres and had to be steadied off the heels of COSMIC STRIKE (T Creek.).

RACE 3: THE NORTHERN TAVERN HANDICAP (DIV 1)

W Kerford replaced J Burgess as the rider of STRETTA owing to that rider being ill.

A routine swab sample was taken from ARADINA, winner of the race.

SKIING (D Azis) jumped away awkwardly.

In the vicinity of the 100 metres SQUIRTLE (J Nevin) shifted in and inconvenienced FLINTO (M Munday).

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of BAD MAN JOSE confirmed the gelding had suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the race. Mrs V Reid, trainer of the gelding, was advised that BAD MAN JOSE was now banned from racing for life in accordance with ARR 53(A).

Stewards questioned L Nolen rider of OZFLICKS and Mr D Jolly trainer into that filly’s performance. L Nolen explained that OZFLICKS had an unusual action and he felt the mare had struggled on today’s surface, which was inclined to be shifty as a result of a light shower prior to the race. Mr Jolly confirmed that opinion and stated that her best performances appear to be on very firm ground and that it was also his opinion that the filly’s action was suspect under pressure. Stewards advised L Nolen and Mr Jolly their explanations would be reported.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of OZFLICKS revealed that filly had sustained a deep laceration to its near fore coronet during the race.

RACE 4: THE CASTLE TAVERN HANDICAP (DIV 2)

A routine swab sample was taken from LOWENDALE ROAD, winner of the race.

On jumping away CHALONNAISE (NZ) (S Price) was inconvenienced when tightened by LOWENDALE ROAD (T Creek) jumping outwards and MONDO ROCK (J Maund) jumping inwards.

Inside the 400 metres, LOWENDALE ROAD (T Creek) was held up for a short distance when racing inside BLUESTONE VILLA (P Gatt), which was inclined to lay in. Shortly afterwards, BLUESTONE VILLA, when ridden with the whip in the left hand, commenced to shift out under pressure.

Correct weight for this event was delayed to allow Mr J Cornell, trainer of YELLOW CARD, to view the photo print for fifth.

RACE 5: HAIGH’S CHOCOLATES HANDICAP

The start of this race was delayed owing to ROMANOUS JEWEL being restless and becoming cast in its stall. ROMANOUS JEWEL was inspected by the Club Veterinary Steward and ruled fit to start.

PALING GAGAH (J Holder) stood in the gates.

BROWNLOW (D Holland) took no part in the race.

C Lindop replaced J Burgess as the rider of WINSOME WILLY.

A routine swab sample was taken from DARK BANNER, winner of the race.

In the vicinity of the 1100 metres SALUTED (W Kerford) shifted in and tightened WINSOME WILLY (C Lindop) onto ROMANOUS JEWEL (D Carney), turning that horse’s hindquarters in. As a result, WINSOME WILLY (C Lindop) lost its position. W Kerford was reprimanded and advised in future to give riders on the inside the room to which they are entitled.

Subsequent to the race correct weight was delayed to permit Stewards to review the official footage of the start of the race. After doing so, in conjunction with J Holder rider of PALING GAGAH, D Holland rider of BROWNLOW and trainer of that gelding Mr A Selfe, Stewards deemed that PALING GAGAH was a runner. BROWNLOW had commenced to put its head into the adjoining inside stall immediately prior to the start being effected and was declared a non runner by Stewards. All bets on BROWNLOW were declared off. Bets on other runners were reduced at the rate of 8 cents in the dollar on the face value of the ticket for the win and 9 cents in the dollar from the winnings only for the place.

Ms K Broughton, representing Mr B Mueller trainer of PALING GAGAH, was advised the gelding was suspended from racing until it could prove in an official barrier trial that it can jump with the field.

RACE 6: DURBRIDGE STAKES

M Pegus was notified as the rider of REAL TIME (NZ). Mr D O’Sullivan, representing Mr R Cameron, was questioned as to the reasons for the late notification of this rider. Subsequently Mr O’Sullivan was advised that Stewards would impose a fine of $50 for the late notification of rider, and asked him to inform Mr Cameron that future breaches may lead to harsher penalties being imposed.

A routine swab sample was taken from LAZING ABOUT, winner of the race.

CONTINUUM (W Kerford) jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start CHEKWENYA (D Tootell), which had been taken out by REAL TIME (M Pegus), shifted out onto NIGHT’S UPON US (P Gatt) resulting in that horse shifting away and making contact with NOBILITY (D Carney), which was hampered.

Making the turn off the back straight APTEGO (T Creek), when being steadied, shifted out and became unbalanced, and had to be steadied off the heels of REAL TIME (M Pegus).

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of NIGHT’S UPON US revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7: LEGACY WIDOWS HANDICAP

RARE GOLD, which collided with the running rail on the way to the barrier, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon prior to the race and ruled fit to start.

RARE GOLD (P Gatt) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out onto KOODA HURRY (T Creek), which was inconvenienced.

A routine swab sample was taken from I’M HONOR HIGH (NZ), winner of the race.

Approaching the 200 metres LUCY’S GIFT (B Vale) shifted out and contacted KOODA HURRY (T Creek), which was inconvenienced.

INTREPID ASTRONAUT (M. Hoppo) and I’M HONOR HIGH (NZ) (J. Nevin) were inclined to lay in, in the straight.

Near the 200 metres RARE GOLD (P Gatt) which was inclined to lay in, shifted in and hampered FLEET DAPPER (C Lindop) on its inside. P Gatt was advised to greater care when shifting ground in future.

A Veterinary inspection of DASHING DANCER, subsequent to the race, revealed the gelding suffered minor lacerations to the near hind heel.

RACE 8: W H WYLIE MEMORIAL HANDICAP

Mr J D Cornell, trainer of FARHILLS, was given permission for that gelding to race in a tongue-tie as it had done at its previous start.

A routine swab sample was taken from COCUS, winner of the race.

Stewards questioned J Nevin, rider of NO DEPOSIT and Mr D O’Sullivan, representing Mr R Smerdon trainer of the gelding, as to the tactics used on NO DEPOSIT in the early stages of the race. J Nevin advised he had been instructed to obtain cover, and had formed the view shortly after the start that if he were to travel forward in the race he would travel four wide without cover. He stated, as a result he took the option to settle his mount towards the rear of the field and despite being further back than he would have preferred, he travelled three wide with cover until the 400 metres. Mr O’Sullivan confirmed the instructions and stated that Mr Smerdon had felt there was a slight doubt that NO DEPOSIT would get the 1500 metres of today’s race, as it had not raced beyond 1400 metres previously. He added he was disappointed that NO DEPOSIT had settled so far back in the race, however he had formed an opinion in the vicinity of the 400 metres the horse was close enough to finish the race off, and he believed the gelding’s run had finished inside the 100 metres. Stewards advised J Nevin and Mr O’Sullivan their explanations would be reported.
