On arrival at the course Mr. C. Conron Trainer of WESTERN UNION requested that the Club's Veterinary Surgeon inspect the gelding as WESTERN UNION had a laceration on it's nose . Acting on a report from the Club's Veterinary Surgeon who believed WESTERN UNION had sustained a laceration to its nose and in his opinion believed that the gelding was unfit to take its place in the field. Acting on this advice Stewards ordered the withdrawal of WESTERN UNION at 11.59 a.m.

M. Mills rider of TIJUANA TAXI (NZ) explained to the Stewards that the gelding travelled well in the early and middle stages of the race, but failed to respond to his riding near the 800 metres, and for this reason he eased TIJUANA TAXI (NZ) down out of the race as he believed that something may have been amiss. Subsequent to the race the Club's Veterinary Surgeon's examination of TIJUANA TAXI (NZ) revealed that the gelding was suffering from an irregular heartbeat. Mr. M. G. Murphy rider of WHAT HAPPENED was found guilty of a charge of careless riding - the careless riding being that near the 700 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of RICKETTY ROCKET thereby taking that gelding in onto BAR SECTOR which in turn was forced in on to the hindquarters of PRIME DANCER turning that filly outwards. BAR SECTOR then had to be checked off the heels of PRIME DANCER when checking clipped the heels of that filly and almost fell. ENCOSTA DRAW which was following also had to be checked off the heels of BAR SECTOR'S and when checking clipped the heels of filly resulting in Stan Tsaikos the filly's rider being dislodged. G. Murphy's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence at midnight on Monday 22nd April, 2002 and to expire at midnight on Saturday 11th May, 2002. After taking all the evidence into account Stewards deemed KASHALIGHT not to be a bleeder under the rules of racing. Mr F Ryan was notified that prior to KASHALIGHT racing again he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate of fitness.

Near the 800 metres BONE JOLTER had to be eased to avoid the heels of YAHOO (J. Julian) which shifted in. J. Julian will be notified to exercise care when shifting ground in future.
