Strathalbyn (SA) - Wednesday 15 August 2001

Track: Good
Weather: Fine/Windy
Rail: Normal position

RACE 1 – GLENELG FUNERALS/SABIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE (Division 1)

In the vicinity of the 800 metres COMPENDIUM (W. Kerford) and BYE BYE BABY (C. Symons) bumped together. Shortly after TASHILADO (B. Claridge) commenced to race fiercely. As a result, whilst being restrained, that filly shifted out making contact with BYE BYE BABY. Shortly after TASHILADO accidentally clipped the heels of DATAI (Darren Holland) and dipped.

B. Vale, rider of SON OF GOLD, reported to Stewards that the gelding changed strides on a number of occasions in the run and over the concluding stages of the event he had become concerned with the action of the gelding. A veterinary inspection of SON OF GOLD revealed that the gelding was showing signs of shin soreness in both front legs.

RACE 2 – CHRISTIES BEACH HOTEL/SABIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE (Division 2)

In the vicinity of the 100 metres KINESIS (J. Lorensini) and TERMINUS PRINCE (M. Neilson) brushed together.

RACE 3 – CONCORD INSURANCE GROUP MAIDEN PLATE

In the vicinity of the 700 metres MISTER HANKEY (B. Vale) rolled in resulting in MOONFLEET MAGIC (C. Lindop) being tightened for galloping room and having to be eased.

RACE 4 – WEST END MAIDEN PLATE (Division 1)

Acting on veterinary advice that BAROSSA CAN CAN was showing signs of soreness in the feet, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of that mare at 8.35 am.

A veterinary inspection of ACCESS POINT on arrival on course revealed that the gelding was suffering minor abrasions to the near hip but was passed fit to take its place in the field.

The start of this race was delayed four minutes owing to a number of runners proving difficult to be placed in their stalls and ENHANCER refusing to enter the barrier stalls. As a result Stewards ordered the withdrawal of ENHANCER at 1.43 pm. All bets on that horse were declared OFF. Bets on other runners were reduced at the rate of fifteen cents in the dollar on the face value of the ticket for the win and fifteen cents in the dollar from the winnings only for the place.

Mr. R. Jolly, trainer of ENHANCER, was advised that a warning had now been placed on this gelding and a repetition of its behaviour at the barrier in future could lead to it being banned for a period.

AWAY WITH FAIRIES (J. Bowditch) was slow to begin.

In the vicinity of the 800 metres KATE’S BRIDGE (C. Symons) showed a tendency to lay out and across the heels of GINGA ‘N’ SPICE (J. Potter).

RACE 5 – WILBURTINS INSURANCE BROKERS MAIDEN PLATE (Division 2)

A swab sample was taken from CELLAY, winner of the race.

In the vicinity of the 600 metres MARIZZIQUE (H. McKechnie) shifted out resulting in YOUTHORIA (C. Symons) being tightened for galloping room between MARIZZIQUE and VILLAGE BOY (S. Cahill).

RACE 6 – MALAYSIA AIRLINES CLASS 4 HANDICAP

Over the concluding stages of the event THUNDER LORD (S. Price) showed a tendency to lay out badly.

RACE 7 – LUMLEY FINANCE CLASS 2 HANDICAP

Owing to a printer’s error H. McKechnie was shown as the rider of CAPTAIN CHRISTIE when in actual fact C. Lindop had been officially engaged.

OXFORD REGENT (D. Tootell) showed a tendency to over race in the early and middle stages of the event.

RACE 8 – ARADLAY INSURANCE BROKERS CLASS 5 HANDICAP

A swab sample was taken from SANDPIT ROAD, winner of the race.

Over the concluding 100 metres of the event NOBLE WIN (M. Hoppo) showed a tendency to lay in badly resulting in that rider having to stop riding that gelding on a number of occasions.

RACE 9 – TRITON INSURANCE CLASS 1 HANDICAP

On jumping away VELVET LAKE (M. Neilson) shifted out onto BILLY’S MY IDOL (C. Symons) who in turn was taken out onto KEEN ON BILL (Darren Holland) resulting in that gelding being taken out and making contact with SEA DAN (D. Carney).

In the vicinity of the 1400 metres MRS. ROGERS (J. Bowditch), whilst being eased, shifted out slightly; at the same time DEFINING (T. Creek) shifted in onto VANDECLARE (D. Tootell) resulting in that mare being taken in slightly. In consequence DONNA’S LAKE (J. Maund), which had been racing between VANDECLARE and MRS. ROGERS, was tightened for galloping room and forced to ease. As a result RATHER GAZE (W. Kerford) was inconvenienced when having to ease to avoid the heels of DONNA’S LAKE. Stewards took no further action as they believed no one rider was responsible.
