Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: True position

RACE 1 – SMOKE-FREE / SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1200 metres

TIERA DEL FUEGO was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, prior to the start, and ruled fit to race.

OUR WICKETKEEPER (S. Cahill) was slow to jump.

Near the 800 metres TRUTRICITY (D. Azis) became hampered when tightened by EVEN SCORE (M. Hoppo), which shifted in when inclined to lay away from ALCHEMY TIME (P. Gatt).

SOUND BRASS hung out making the turn into the straight. P. Thomas, rider of the gelding, explained that SOUND BRASS had commenced to hang out racing to the 600 metres and thereafter had hung out so severely that in the vicinity of the 300 metres he had eased the gelding out of the event. Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of SOUND BRASS failed to reveal any visible abnormalities. Ms. A. Williams, Trainer of SOUND BRASS, was advised the gelding would be required to trial satisfactorily in an Official Trial, around a turn, before accepting for a future event.

PICTURESQUE (W. Kerford) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

Near the 100 metres EVEN SCORE (M. Hoppo) was inconvenienced when obliged to shift out to avoid the heels of MISS BOSS (J. Lyon), which rolled out under pressure.

Mr. J. Welsh, Trainer of ROSE OF CONISTON, informed Stewards that he considered the filly had been ridden contrary to his instructions to Travis Creek. Travis Creek explained that early in the event ROSE OF CONISTON had been unable to clear runners on his inside and he was obliged to race three wide. In the vicinity of the 1000 metres he stated that he had eased when crossed by YOUNG SMYTZER (S. Price) and thereafter the filly had got its head up, wanted to hang out and raced on one rein. T. Creek added that he had commenced to ride his mount from the 600 metres, however, partly due to it wanting to hang out, he had been unable to hold the eventual winner when it shifted out near the 400 metres. After considering the submissions from Mr. Welsh and T. Creek and viewing the official video footage, Mr. Welsh was informed that Stewards were of the opinion the footage supported T. Creek’s explanation.

ALCHEMY TIME lost its off fore plate during the race.

Subsequent to the race PICTURESQUE and ROSE OF CONISTON were examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 2 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY 2Y&UP MAIDEN PLATE – 1350 metres

Mr. C. McGlinchey was questioned regarding the late notification of riders for MARIZZIQUE in this event and VELVET LAKE in Race 5. Mr. McGlinchey was fined $50 for failing to declare riders by the required time.

BOOJUM (B. Vale) and KEEP THE BOUNTY (Darren Holland) were slow to jump.

On jumping away HAPPEN CHANCE (M. Hoppo) shifted in and hampered EIRE’S BABE (C. Lindop).

Near the 1000 metres BOOJUM (B. Vale), which was inclined to race keenly, shifted out abruptly, making heavy contact with KEEP THE BOUNTY (Darren Holland).

Inside the 800 metres SAN SONATA (NZ) (D. Azis), which was inclined to race keenly and shift about, rolled in and tightened KATE’S BRIDGE (D. Tootell).

At the entrance to the straight YUSRA (P. Gatt), when attempting a tight run inside ACCESS POINT (J. Marks), brushed that gelding, which reacted and shifted out abruptly onto CONSCIENCE (W. Kerford), forcing that gelding across the heels of RUSSIAN VAULTER (S Price), resulting in CONSCIENCE being forced to check.

BOOJUM sustained a laceration to its off fore leg during the race.

Subsequent to the race RUSSIAN VAULTER was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 3 – SUNSMART CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1st Division) – 1200 metres

The start of this race was delayed owing to BRIGHT ROCK proving difficult to load. Mr. J. Gask, Trainer of BRIGHT ROCK, was advised that a repetition of the gelding’s behaviour may lead to action being taken against it.

On jumping away BRIGHT ROCK (J. Holder) shifted out onto DIVINE ECHO (A. Stead), resulting in that mare shifting out onto CAPTIVATE YOU (W. Kerford), which shifted out tightening DECIDELA (J. Potter), onto LITTLE MISS LINA (P. Gatt), which was forced to lose its position, when avoiding the heels of PATRIARCH (M. Neilson), as that gelding was taken in by DOUBLE TRAP (G. Dorol).

BRIGHT ROCK suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the event. Mr. J. Gask, Trainer of the gelding, was advised that BRIGHT ROCK was now suspended from racing for a period of three months in accordance with AR 53A.

POLONAISE lost its near hind plate during the race.

Subsequent to the race G. Dorol was examined by the Club Doctor and ruled unfit to fulfil his remaining engagements.

RACE 4 – SUNSMART CLASS 2 HANDICAP (2nd Division) – 1200 metres

Acting on a confirmed telephone advice from Trainer Mr. D. Halliday, WALAMA (NZ) was withdrawn by Stewards at 8.20 a.m., owing to the mare having swelling in its brisket region.

On jumping away AFFINITAS (D. Azis) was obliged to steady and lose its position when tightened by LOVE A GRANGE (S. Price), which shifted in and DISCOUNTER (C. Lindop), which shifted out.

Inside the 900 metres OIL CAN ANNIE (C. Lever) was obliged to steady off the heels of LOVE A GRANGE (S. Price), which rolled in.

At the entrance to the straight AFFINITAS (D. Azis) was obliged to steady off the heels of DAMOCLES (D. Tootell), which shifted out abruptly.

Subsequent to the race C. Lever reported that he had been struck on the head by his mount and after being examined by the Club Doctor, was ruled unfit to continue his engagements.

RACE 5 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY DISTANCE CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 2050 metres

Upon arrival on course BLAZES was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported the mare was lame in the off fore leg. Acting on that advice BLAZES was withdrawn by Stewards at 1.52 p.m. Mr. G. Kennewell, Trainer of BLAZES, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for a future event.

DAPPERSTAN (T. Creek) was slow to jump.

Shortly after the start TERTIAN’S GAMBLE (D. Cleaver) commenced to hang out and continued to hang out making the turn out of the straight on the first occasion, resulting in D. Cleaver being unable to keep the gelding on course and eventually easing it out of the race.

Subsequent to the race TERTIAN’S GAMBLE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities. Mr. D. Taylor, Trainer of TERTIAN’S GAMBLE, was advised the gelding was now suspended from racing until it could prove in an official trial that it could race tractably around a corner.

RACE 6 – SMOKE-FREE CHALLENGE 2002 (Heat 11) – 1200 metres

Upon arrival on course IRISH JANTEE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported the gelding had swelling in the brisket region and was unfit to start. Acting on that advice IRISH JANTEE was withdrawn by Stewards at 2.17 p.m.

Near the 700 metres MR. ICEMAN (B. Vale), while racing tight inside SEDONIC (M. Hagley), was obliged to steady to avoid the heels of ANTIQUE CHAIR (P. Gatt), which shifted out. P. Gatt was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground. B. Vale was questioned regarding his riding style during this incident. B. Vale was informed that he had been given the benefit of a doubt as to whether he had used his right elbow in an improper manner, and was advised that similar actions in future may lead to severe action being taken against him.

Approaching the 150 metres LA SUPREMO (T. Barras) shifted out while attempting to improve and contacted CHECA (C. Lindop), taking that gelding out onto the hindquarters of MOOTIARA (S. Price), which was turned out, resulting in CHECA becoming unbalanced and making contact with both runners.

Over the concluding stages ANTIQUE CHAIR (P. Gatt) shifted in under riding onto MOOTIARA (S. Price), taking that gelding in onto CHECA (C. Lindop), which was inconvenienced. P. Gatt was advised of his obligations when shifting ground.

Subsequent to the race SEDONIC was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 – SUNSMART CLASS 5 HANDICAP – 1350 metres

KURI BAY (USA) (S. Price) and SHIRAZ NOW (M. Hoppo), which had been restless in the stalls, were both slow to jump.

In the middle stages of the race CELLAY (J. Potter) was inclined to race fiercely.

Near the 150 metres SNIPALLAH (M. Hagley), while attempting a neat run, was tightened and obliged to ease as CANADIAN COMET (W. Kerford) rolled out under riding at the same time as CLARENDON’S CURSE (D. Tootell) rolled in. When questioned regarding her riding of SNIPALLAH, Ms. M. Hagley explained that she had been instructed to allow the mare to find its feet in the early stages, before attempting to work home from approximately the 400 metres. She explained that in the vicinity of the 400 metres she had commenced to put her mount under pressure, however due to the formation of the field was reluctant to take what appeared to be her only option in going to the outside, as in her opinion she was being forced too wide. Ms. Hagley stated that she had been disappointed when attempting a run outside CANADIAN COMET approaching the 150 metres, and after having to ease her mount had then made ground, under pressure, over the concluding stages. She added that SNIPALLAH had run on generously. Ms. Hagley was advised that her explanation would be reported.

RACE 8 – SUNSMART CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1600 metres

Near the 900 metres REGION (NZ) (S. Price), which had commenced to race keenly, in being restrained off the heels of DAMSELAC WARRIOR (P. Gatt), shifted out abruptly, taking MADRID (J. Potter) out onto TASHKENT (NZ) (J. Maund), which was severely hampered.

At the entrance to the straight MR. JUNEE (S. Cahill) brushed LORD JAPATO (NZ) (J. Lyon) at the same time as that gelding was inclined to lay out onto the heels of TWISTED DREAM (A. Stead), which had been inclined to lay in, resulting in LORD JAPATO (NZ) contacting the hindquarters of TWISTED DREAM, turning that mare in. Shortly after TWISTED DREAM shifted in abruptly, resulting in MR. JUNEE clipping its heels.

Correct Weight was delayed to permit S. Price, rider of REGION (NZ), to view the official footage of the concluding stages. After doing so S. Price declined an option to lodge an objection. S. Cahill, rider of the 2nd Placegetter MR. JUNEE, lodged an objection against TWISTED DREAM (A. Stead) being declared the winner, on the grounds of alleged interference from the entrance to the straight. After considering the evidence of both riders, viewing the official footage and acting on their own observations, Stewards were not satisfied that TWISTED DREAM had been singularly responsible for the interference to MR. JUNEE and the objection was dismissed.
