Race 1 - COPPERAMA SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP - 1400 metres: "Rezidencia (NZ)" jumped away awkwardly, and lost a little ground. Race 2 - NEW GLEAM SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Prior to correct weight B. Fenech, rider of "Juror", second placegetter, viewed the Stewards' patrol video and decided not to lodge an objection. F. Alesci, rider of "Nobody", sixth placegetter, was severely reprimanded for failing to weigh in. For some distance after passing the 300 metres "Blue Wina" (R. McLeod) shifted out under pressure and took "Juror" out off its course, R. McLeod was notified that, whilst the Stewards accepted that his mount was hanging, he must stop riding and straighten his mount when it shifts ground, in future. Race 3 - ANONYME SUPER VOBIS PLATE - 1000 metres: Mr. J. Marconi, trainer of "Tycoon Ruler", approached the Club's Veterinary Surgeons and advised them that the colt had swelling to its near neck, and he was concerned that this was the result of a wound from a recent injection. The Stewards questioned Mr. Jim Marconi and Mr. Carlo Marconi, licensed trainer, who stated that they were unaware of any abnormal activity at the stable in the past week. Mr. J. Marconi stated that in hindsight, and after listening to the veterinary report, the inflammation may have been caused by an injection of Cartrophen earlier in the week. The Stewards, bearing in mind that a pre-race sample taken from "Tycoon Ruler" was clear of any irregularity, and acting on the advice of the Club's Veterinary Surgeon that the injection of Cartrophen was within the Rules of Racing and that in his view the horse was fit to run, and acting on Mr. Marconi's assurance that no other treatment had been given to "Tycoon Ruler", the Stewards permitted the colt to run, but ordered that blood and urine samples be taken from "Tycoon Ruler" subsequent to the event. A veterinary examination of "Tycoon Ruler" which weakened over the concluding stages of the race, revealed no apparent abnormality. Race 4 - CENDRILLON HANDICAP - 1200 metres: "Kentucky Hula", which was delayed en route to the course, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon on arrival, and passed fit to race. "Shimo Star (NZ)" was reluctant to go to the barrier, and eventually was led to the barrier without its rider, after R. Wheeler had attempted to mount "Shimo Star (NZ)" on more than one occasion, and had been dislodged. Mr. M. Enright, trainer, Mr. R. Noonan, registered stablehand, and R. Wheeler were all severely reprimanded in respect of their actions when attempting to get "Shimo Star (NZ)" to the barrier. "Shimo Star (NZ)", which had been suspended previously for unruly behaviour at the barrier, was suspended from racing for a period of one month and then until such time as it trials to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an organised trial, that trial to include satisfactory behaviour both entering and leaving the mounting yard, and going to the barrier. "Provident" began awkwardly and lost ground. P. Hammersley, rider of "Just Devine", explained to the Stewards that he had been instructed to keep his mount balanced running down the hill, and not to improve his position until he straightened. Hammersley added that after beginning awkwardly his mount had lost its position when tightened slightly after the start, and for this reason he had raced further back in the field than was his intention. After viewing the Stewards' patrol video and the TV version of the race P. Hammersley stated that in hindsight he agreed with the Stewards that as he had been out of his ground at that stage he should have made an attempt to improve his position from the 600 metres to approaching the home turn. After taking into account P. Hammersley's relative inexperience the Stewards took no action other than to notify him that he would be expected to attempt to improve his position when out of his ground at vital stages of races in future. Race 5 - SOULTINE HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Acting on a confirmed telephone call from Mrs. L. Larsen, representing trainer G. Larsen, who stated that "Dalla Vista" was found to be suffering from a nasal discharge shortly after eight o'clock this morning, the Stewards withdrew the gelding from the race at 9.12 a.m. Mrs. Larsen will produce a veterinary certificate in respect of "Dalla Vista". On arrival at the racecourse "Kingston Campbell" was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to run. S. Baster, rider of "St. Chrisoph", sixth placegetter, was severely reprimanded for not weighing in. "Kingston Campbell" was slow to begin. Near the 1000 metres "Scenic Warrior" shifted in and bumped "Our Guided Missle (NZ)". Approaching the 800 metres "'Crusher McCauley" had to be eased to avoid the heels of "Masquerade" (Bronwyn Mathieson), which shifted in before being taken in slightly by "Amber Boy". B. Mathieson will be notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future in respect of the initial stages of the tightening. Near the 800 metres "Zero Drama" had to be checked when tightened for room by "Runs to Win", which after initially shifting in away from "St. Chrisoph", was taken in by that gelding which, in turn, was taken in by "Gattaca (NZ)" (D. Gauci), which shifted in when hanging. Whilst the Stewards did not hold one rider fully responsible they notified D. Gauci that in the initial stages of this tightening they believed he should have done more to assist the riders inside of him. Near the 500 metres "Runs to Win" had to be checked when tightened for room by "St. Chrisoph", which was taken in by "Gattaca (D. Gauci), which shifted in slightly when not sufficiently clear. During the incident "Runs to Win" made contact with the hindquarters of "St. Chrisoph", and "St. Chrisoph" made contact with the hindquarters of "Gattaca (NZ)". D. Gauci was given the benefit of the doubt as to whether he was fully responsible for the incident. However, he was severely reprimanded, and notified that he must ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners on his inside. S. Baster, rider of "St. Chrisoph", advised the Stewards that his mount was reluctant to race over the concluding stages of the race. A veterinary examination of "St. Chrisoph" revealed that the gelding had sustained a small laceration to its near hind leg. On return to scale it was noted that "Runs to Win" had lost its off fore plate. Race 6 - BARTON STAKES - 1400 metres: N. Callow, rider of "Chattanooga", explained to the Stewards that his mount had travelled reasonably well in the middle stages of the race, but had failed to respond to his riding when put under pressure in the early part of the straight. N. Callow added that "Chattanooga" appeared to pull up well. Race 7 - NUNKALOWE HANDICAP - 2100 metres: "Repeat Performance" hung out badly in the middle and concluding stages of the race. For some distance approaching the home turn "Kinjika" was held up for a run behind "Lady of the Dance (NZ)", which was weakening, and then rounding the home turn had to be checked off the heels of that mare. Race 8 - GAINE CARRINGTON HANDICAP - 2100 metres: "Keystone" was held up for a short distance rounding the last turn. B. Fenech, rider of "Ottoman", explained to the Stewards that he had ridden his mount today in a similar manner to the way he had ridden it at Moonee Valley when the horse was successful at its previous start, but added that the slow pace today as compared to Moonee Valley disadvantaged his horse, which needs to be ridden back in the field, and requires pace in a race to perform at its best. Fenech added that in his view while the run had appeared disappointing he felt that the slow pace was the reason for its performance. A veterinary examination of "Ottoman" failed to reveal any abnormality. A veterinary examination of "Keystone" revealed the gelding to have been temporarily distressed subsequent to the race. SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of all races today, and further blood samples and a urine sample were taken from "Tycoon Ruler" subsequent to its race - Race 3
