Race 1 - KENVAIN SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP - 1000 metres: No report. Race 2 - CAPTAIN PERI HANDICAP - 2456 metres: On arrival at the barrier "Tigeron" was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon who found that the gelding was lame in the near hind leg and was unfit to run. Acting on veterinary advice the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "Tigeron" at 1.05 p.m. Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies wagered on "Tigeron" be refunded, and that all successful bets on horses prior to the time of withdrawal of "Tigeron" be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Four cents; Place Bets: Five cents; Winning Concession Bets: Four cents, and Doubles Bets: Four cents. All monies bet after the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal were ordered to be paid at face value of the ticket. Approaching the winning post "Narcissism" was inconvenienced when tightened slightly between "Suave Lover" and "Soldado", which was shifting in under pressure. Race 3 - CLAY HERO SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP - 1400 metres: "Oakhill Dancer" was slow to begin. In the early part of the straight "Armour" and "Acquaintance" were hampered by "Air Cooled (NZ)" (D. Taggart), which shifted in after having shifted in slightly to avoid the heels of "The Concert Grand". Taggart was reprimanded, and notified to exercise far greater care when shifting ground in future. Race 4 - SUMMER HANDICAP - 1300 metres: D. Oliver, rider of "Julouka", was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 1100 metres when not sufficiently clear of "Blue Marwina", thereby taking that mare in across the running of "Anneden Gold", which resulted in "Anneden Gold" having to be checked, and also "Blue Marwina" having to be checked. D. Oliver was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Sunday, 20th January, and to expire at midnight on Friday, 8th February, 2002. The Stewards also severely reprimanded L. Milham, rider of "Anneden Gold" for the evidence he tendered during the course of the above inquiry. Near the 600 metres "Blue Marwina" got its head up when being steadied off the heels of "Julouka". On return to scale it was noted that "Blue Marwina" had lost its near hind plate. Race 5 - GOLD STAKES HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Prior to correct weight M. Gatt, rider of "Mr. Gweilo", fifth placegetter, viewed the Stewards' patrol video and the TV version of the race, and decided to lodge an objection against "Macmiki" being declared third placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference in the straight. After the parties had viewed the Stewards' patrol video and the TV version of the race, and after they had heard the submissions of the parties concerned, the Stewards dismissed the objection. It was established that near the 200 metres "Mr. Gweilo" had to ease and change course when disappointed for a run on the inside of "Macmiki", which shifted in slightly, and after switching to the outside of "Macmiki" "Mr. Gweilo" was then inconvenienced in the run to the winning post when "Macmiki" shifted out slightly. On jumping away "Gold Cruise" was badly hampered and "Mighty Storm" was hampered when tightened for room between "Rapid Waters:" and "Baltik and Bread", which jumped away awkwardly, and shifted in abruptly. Also on jumping away "Macmiki" knuckled. B. Prebble, rider of "Mighty Storm", when questioned stated that after being hampered at the start he rode the gelding back in accordance with the instructions, and when he was inconvenienced from the 800 metres on a number of occasions when "Gold Cruise" shifted ground in front of him he was unable to improve his position for this reason. Prebble added that he switched to the inside of "Gold Cruise" at the entrance to the straight, and then had some difficulty in obtaining a run in the early part of the straight between "Gold Cruise: and "Specular" for some distance before obtaining a clear run from the 200 metres. Prebble also stated that "Mighty Storm" felt rough in its action throughout the race. The Stewards, whilst accepting that "Mighty Storm" was hampered at the start and was inconvenienced from the 800 metres when "Gold Cruise" was shifting ground in front of it, the Stewards notified B. Prebble that in similar circumstances he must make a greater effort to improve his position sooner than he did on this occasion. On return to scale it was noted that "Just like Kelly" had been galloped on, on the off hind leg. Race 6 - LUCRATIVE HANDICAP - 1600 metres: "Count Down" was slow to begin. Shortly after the start Camilla's Beau (NZ)" was hampered when taken in by "Brockade" (R. Wheeler), which shifted in. R. Wheeler will be reprimanded, and notified that he must ensure that he is two lengths clear when shifting ground at all times. Shortly after this incident "Power and Rhythm (NZ)". which was laying in, had to be checked when tightened for room between "Harribella (NZ)" and "Jacque", which shifted out. On return to scale it was noted that "Clarendon's Curse" had lost its near fore plate. Race 7 - PERFECT BLISS SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP - 1200 metres: Shortly after the start "Starts with a Kiss" was hampered, and had to be eased when tightened for room between "Regal Vintage" and "Snow Board", which shifted in slightly. On the home turn "Bonny Brew", which was laying in, accidentally clipped the heels of "Regal Vintage" and knuckled when that filly shifted out slightly to avoid the heels of "Doree". At the entrance to the straight "Furtive Witness" was hampered by "Fun for Us" which, when laying in, shifted in away from "Snow Board". Near the 200 metres 'Tin Tan Belle", which was making ground, had to shift out to obtain a clear run, and in doing so brushed "Starts with a Kiss" on the hindquarters. Race 8 - KALLISTA HANDICAP - 1600 metres: On jumping away "Jamaica Win" shifted out and tightened "Yakama" on to the hindquarters of "A Scarlet Lady". The Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the reason for "Yakama" falling near the 1400 metres to a date to be fixed as V. Duric was indisposed and unable to give evidence. However, evidence was taken from R.Wheeler, rider of "Tina's Debut", W. Davis, rider of "Bellered", Dean Yendall, rider of "Jamaica Win" and R. McLeod, rider of "A Scarlet Lady". Near the 800 metres "Nassi Doll" brushed the running rail. SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of all races today.
FINES/EXPLANATIONS: Mr. Jack Westerlo, trainer of "Upsadaisy", was fined $50 for the late notification of a rider for the filly, which ran in the Perfect Bliss Super Vobis Handicap - Race 7. Mr. Jamie Edwards, trainer of "Racey Lady", was fined $50 for the late notification of B. Fenech as the rider of the mare which ran in the Summer Handicap - Race 4.
