Cathedral Handicap 1300m
King Of Passion jumped awkwardly, shifted out and
bumped Mammoth. At the 700m Rare Insight shifted out and bumped Beautiful Finish. Passing
the 300m Delusional shifted out taking King Of Passion out causing Rare Insight to be
momentarily hampered. King Of Passion then shifted back in and bumped Delusional (App. M.
Howarth). A short distance later Delusional shifted out under pressure, which resulted in
Ignite Me being hampered when tightened for room between Delusional and King Of Passion.
App. Howarth was advised that in similar circumstances it would be better to put away the
whip and exercise more control over his mount. When questioned, Mr T. Martin, trainer of
Delusional, stated that he had left the riding tactics to App. M. Howarth dependent on how
Delusional began from the barriers. App. Howarth stated that whilst Delusional was
slightly slow to begin, it mustered speed quickly and after crossing to the lead the
gelding wanted to hang out and overraced thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination
revealed Delusional to be displaying a slow recovery rate. A swab sample was taken. Mr
Martin was advised that Delusional must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards
before it is permitted to race again.
RACE 2: Panasonic Handicap 1500m
When questioned regarding the improved performance of the
winner, Trillion Delight, trainer Mr G. Begg stated that the gelding had had only three
previous starts with his stable, the first two being in Group 3 events, but at its most
recent start at Gosford on 10 April Trillion Delight did not handle the tight track, raced
wide and hung out badly. Mr Begg stated that at track work during the week he added
blinkers to Trillion Delight's gear with the result that the gelding raced tractably and
appeared today to benefit from this additional gear. Mr Begg was notified that as Trillion
Delight had now established form it would be expected to race consistently. When
questioned, C. Munce stated that Living End hung in badly in the straight, which resulted
in him having to pull his whip through into his right hand near the 250m. When questioned,
C. Brown (Go Bint) stated that he was able to take up a position on the pace early and
travelled well, but the gelding was disappointing and did not respond to his riding in the
straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Go Bint revealed no abnormality. A swab
sample was taken. Trainer Mr N. McBurney stated that the only excuse he could offer was
that first up on 3 April Go Bint was favoured by the soft going on the Kensington track
and also previously Go Bint has disappointed in its second up run. He stated that Go Bint
had done well leading into the race and undertook to report to the Stewards if there was
anything amiss with Go Bint following the event.
RACE 3: Sotherton's Chartered Accountants Handicap 1400m
Kurrajong Mist reared as the gates were released and
lost ground as a result. At the start Vita jumped out and hampered Viejo. Approaching the
200m Kesia was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for a run between Damowin and
Viejo, which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Girl Of Illuminare to
have sustained speedy cuts to the off-hind pastern. When questioned concerning the tactics
adopted on Girl Of Illuminare, D. Beadman stated that he was under no particular
instructions, but when the mare missed the start slightly and was stepping up in distance
from 1100m to 1400m he elected to find cover. He added that Girl Of Illuminare raced
keenly in the early stages and then settled, but was disappointing and in his view failed
to run out the journey. A post-race veterinary examination of Girl Of Illuminare revealed
no abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr M. Lees advised the Stewards that
Vita, which raced disappointingly, will now be spelled. App. S. Pollard (Viejo) pleaded
guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a)) in that he permitted his mount to
shift out on the home turn resulting in Palais being crowded out onto Girl Of Illuminare,
which resulted in Palais losing its rightful running and Girl Of Illuminare being
hampered. App. Pollard's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on
Thursday 25 April 2002 and to expire on Friday 3 May 2002 on which day he may ride.
RACE 4: Makinson & d'Apice Solicitors Superfecta
1200m
Beryl was slow to begin. Rounding the first turn Prince
Of Play, which was overracing, had to be steadied when firstly taken out by Schahriar and
then from the heels of Omawind (R. Thompson), which shifted in. R. Thompson was advised to
ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. Beryl, which was following, had to be
steadied in consequence. Passing the 600m Schahriar got its head up when being restrained
off the heels of Zabarra. On the home turn Prince Of Play, which was endeavouring to
improve to the outside of the heels of Omawind, shifted out and made contact with the
hindquarters of Alibarber. Shortly after Schahriar was disappointed for a run between
Omawind and Zabarra. Baghdad was held up for a run until passing the 200m. Over the
concluding stages Prince Of Play shifted out badly when weakening. A post-race veterinary
examination revealed Prince Of Play to be displaying a poor recovery rate, coughing and
had sustained a speedy cut to the off-hind coronet. Trainer Mr L. Curtis undertook to the
results of a full veterinary check, including the results of an endoscopic examination. An
inquiry into the gelding's run was adjourned pending receipt of that advice.
RACE 5: Parramatta Leagues Club Handicap ( Div 1) 1400m
As Knickerbocker Kid commenced to improve to the outside of
Juggling Time passing the 200m, Juggling Time shifted out resulting in Knickerbocker Kid
being taken out and causing Norman's Way to be checked off the heels of Varicool. In this
incident Norman's Way was struck across the nose by the whip of D. McLellan (Varicool). A
post-race veterinary examination of Nanny Maroon, which failed to run on in the straight,
revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken. When questioned, P. Falvey (Routine
Blue) stated that he was under instructions to find cover as his mount had overraced in
the lead at its last start. Mr A. Denham, representing trainer Mr J. Denham, stated that
whilst the intention had been to allow Routine Blue to settle, the horse had got back
further than intended. Mr Denham was reminded of his obligation to notify the Stewards of
any change of riding tactics. Routine Blue was badly held up for a run until approaching
the 100m and near the 250m was struck across the nose by the whip of D. McLellan
(Varicool).
RACE 6: DDF Bishops Cup 1900m
About the 300m Bedouin (D. Beadman) shifted out slightly
and bumped Zero Point, which was commencing to give ground quickly. In the incident Zero
Point became unbalanced and shifted out resulting in Mr. Attorney having to be checked
when tightened for room between Zero Point and Nadzoff. D. Beadman was advised that in
similar circumstances he would be expected to keep his mounts straight. Questamatic did
not obtain clear running until passing the 200m. Nadzoff had some difficulty obtaining
clear running in the straight. When questioned concerning Prime Target racing more
forward, J. Innes stated that he was under instructions to endeavour to get his mount away
cleanly and as he was trapped wide he then elected to go forward and cross the field.
RACE 7: BAC Systems Handicap (Div 2) 1400m
My Special Scorpio was held up for a run until passing
the 200m. About the 150m Impregnable (B. Pengelly) shifted out taking Ra Eclipse out and
causing Domero to be hampered. B. Pengelly was advised to make more effort to keep his
mounts straight. M. de Montfort (Storm Zero) was questioned concerning the amount of
initiative and vigour he showed in the straight on 4 th placegetter, Storm Zero. M. de
Montfort explained that at the entrance to the straight he elected not to go to the inside
as he believed it was inferior going and therefore shifted out and followed the eventual 2
nd placegetter, Magic Heights. He stated that on two occasions in the straight he stopped
riding when endeavouring to improve into a run between Magic Heights and Xantra, which
shifted in. When questioned, trainer Mr A. Denham stated that Storm Zero had been fancied
by the stable as it was stepping up to a more suitable distance and its fitness had
improved since its first-up performance at Randwick on 6 April. Owners Mr J. C. Bezzina
and Mr G. A. Roney tendered evidence of stable support. The Stewards adjourned the inquiry
so that betting ledgers may be examined.
