Randwick (NSW) - Saturday 11 May 2002
Weather: Overcast
Track: Good

RACE 1: Paddock Handicap 1400m:

Trainer Mr T. Martin was fined $100 for failing to produce the Document of Description for Native Jester. Checkered Past was slow to begin. When the pace steadied approaching the 1000m Checkered Past had to be checked off the heels of Fleet Harriet and in so doing shifted out and bumped Continental Dane. Approaching the 600m Checkered Past, which was pulling, shifted out and bumped Continental Dane resulting in Continental Dane becoming momentarily unbalanced. Checkered Past had some difficult obtaining a clear run in the early part of the straight.

RACE 2: Lawn Handicap 1400m

Yes She Can Cancan was slow to begin. After travelling 100m Helden Park made contact with Soprana and became unbalanced. Shortly after straightening Yes She Can Cancan and Helden Park came together when Yes She Can Cancan was disappointed for a run between King Of The Realm and Helden Park. When questioned D. Beadman (Maskerado) stated that he was under instructions from trainer Mr G. Rogerson to allow Maskerado to settle as it had pulled hard in front at its most recent start when it led and was successful at Royal Randwick on 13 April 2002. Furthermore, it was stepping up 200m in distance and had gone up 2kg in weight. He added that he folded across and trailed the eventual winner throughout and giving due regard to the fact that the race developed into a sprint home, he still got to within a half length at the 200m but then peaked on its run and in his view had every chance. Mr Fraser-Campin, representing trainer Mr G. Rogerson, advised that Maskerado had raced back in its first start and although the intention was not to lead today, the instructions in his view had not been markedly different. The Stewards advised Mr Fraser-Campin that as the horse had led at its last start he should have notified today of the intention to find cover.

RACE 3: Turf Handicap 2400m

When questioned, Mr B. Lawson, trainer of Native Zephyr, which raced forward today, stated that his instructions had been consistent with instructions given at its three most recent starts.

RACE 4: Semaphore Handicap 1200m

Curvaceous Miss was a late withdrawal at 9.10am acting on veterinary advice. When questioned C. Munce stated that Zabarra tried to jump too quickly, knuckled over badly and took some strides to regain its balance, which resulted in the gelding settling at the tail of the field. Heptonstall lay out over the final 500m. Zabarra ran out under pressure over the final 100m obliging its rider, C. Munce, to stop riding and straighten his mount. When questioned, D. Beasley (Mac's Success) stated that he was under no specific instructions, but as the gelding had raced fiercely at its last start he did not force his mount early, and with the reasonable early pace he finished up further back than he intended. He added that Mac's Success then was disappointing in that it failed to respond to his riding. Trainer Mr P. McGregor could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance and undertook to report if anything is amiss with Mac's Success in the days subsequent.

RACE 5: Leger Handicap 1100m

Fair Praise, Kohoh and Russell On were slow to begin. Kohoh hung out rounding the home turn. Post-race veterinary examinations revealed Heraklid was lame in the near-fore leg and Kohoh had sustained a laceration to the off-hind coronet. Trainer Mr S. Brown will be advised that a veterinary clearance must be produced before Heraklid is permitted to race again.

RACE 6: Crossing Handicap 1800m

Devilina stepped over the crossing at the 1600m.

RACE 7: Birdcage Welter Handicap 1400m

Xantra was slow to begin. On jumping Varicool was hampered when tightened for room between Stoway and Desert Sashay, both of which shifted ground. Magic Heights overraced throughout the early and middle stages. Approaching the 900m Shamrocks lost its position when tightened for room between Lord Denning and Brave Prince, which shifted out. At the same point Xantra had to be steadied off the heels of King Of Acapulco. When questioned, C. Brown stated that after knuckling over badly at the start Lord Denning travelled reasonably well, but near the 100m put in a few rough strides and he eased his mount down. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Lord Denning had sustained lacerations to the inside front of the near hock and was displaying a poor recovery rate. Mr P. Snowden, representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, undertook to provide the results of a full veterinary examination of Lord Denning. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Magic Heights lost its near-hind plate and abraded its near-hind bumper in running.

RACE 8: Grandstand Handicap 1600m

Kesia got its head up and raced ungenerously in the early stages. Mr C. Brown, trainer of Nas Princess, which raced back in the field today after leading at its most recent start at Rosehill Gardens on 27 April 2002, will be notified that he must advise the Stewards of any change in riding instructions. At the 1100m Kazzaam had to check off the heels of Guide.
