Randwick (NSW) - Saturday 6 April 2002
Weather: Fine
Track: Good

Supplementary Report:

Race 6: oneworld Country Cup 1600m: Trainer Ms D. Poidevin-Laine reported that on return to the stable a veterinary examination revealed Terrible Taurus had a swollen knee and that the horse will now be spelled.

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

As D. McLellan and P. Payne were indisposed the following substitutions were made:

Race 4 G. Boss on Star Of The Seas; Race 5 B. Cooper on Osca Warrior; Race 6 D. Beadman on Quays; Race 7 B. Stanley on Ra Eclipse; Race 8 B. York on Cheverny; C. Brown on Bracing Rhythm.

P. Payne will be interviewed concerning his reported indisposition at a date to be fixed.

RACE 1: Safilo Handicap 1000m:

Bold Quest got its near-fore leg over the stall partition and was withdrawn acting on veterinary advice at 12.31pm. The Stewards directed no alteration to betting. Trainer Mr T. Donnelly was advised that Bold Quest must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before it is permitted to race again. A veterinary examination of Antagonise, which occupied the adjoining stall, passed that filly fit to start. Passing the 600m Schahriar hung out badly taking Danebeam out onto Alibarber. Storm Zero, which was following, was steadied in consequence. Schahriar, which was held up for a run in the early part of the straight, was then inclined to lay out under pressure over the concluding stages. Danebeam was held up for a run until approaching the 200m. Approaching the 200m Mt. Gower was checked when disappointed for a run between Kianben and Al Sakeb. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Al Sakeb, L. Beasley stated that his mount was trapped wide without cover and weakened badly over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Al Sakeb to be displaying a poor recovery rate. A swab sample was taken. An inquiry into Al Sakeb's performance was adjourned until trainer Mr T. Donnelly gives consideration to its immediate racing future.

RACE 2: Keith Mackay Quality Handicap 1200m:

Splish and Soprana were slow to begin. Silver Success jumped awkwardly. After travelling 100m Sparkling Gulch (M. de Montfort) shifted in resulting in Beautiful Finish being taken in onto Splish causing both horses to be hampered. M. de Montfort was advised to make more effort in similar circumstances to prevent his mounts shifting ground. Shortly afterwards Splish shifted out tightening Beautiful Finish onto Soprana, which had to be checked across the heels of Make Me Strong. A short distance later Splish ducked out resulting in Beautiful Finish being checked. Make Me Strong and Skytripper were hampered in consequence. Sparkling Gulch then laid in linking up with the course proper at the 900m resulting in Verstak being hampered. Passing the 200m as Skytripper commenced to improve to outside the heels of Lady Iscariot, that runner shifted out slightly, which resulted in Skytripper shifting out and bumping Fortunato causing that horse to be hampered. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Splish had been galloped on the outside of the near-fore cannon. It was observed also that Splish had a healing wound to the corner of the lips in the offside of the mouth. Trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse was reminded of her obligation to notify the Stewards prior to the race of any condition that may affect the horse.

RACE 3: Moët & Chandon Plate 1400m:

Maestro Maker knuckled over at the start. Passing the 700m Au Naturale and Bold Troubador came together as Au Naturale attempted to come off the fence from behind the leader, Pimpala Player. Klazig was held up for a run until near the 200m. Near the 200m Au Naturale (L. Cassidy), which improved to the inside of Pimpala Player, shifted out under pressure tightening Pimpala Player out onto Bold Troubador. L. Cassidy was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding sooner than he did on this occasion. C. Brown (Colin The Brave) was spoken to concerning allowing his mount to shift in after crossing the finish line, which resulted in Bold Troubador blundering badly when he struck the heels of that runner. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Bold Troubador had sustained a laceration to the off-side cannon region.

RACE 4: Japan Racing Association Plate 2000m:

Heeby Reiby was inclined to get its head up and overrace in the middle stages. At the 600m Heeby Reiby was awkwardly placed on the heels of Restless when endeavouring to go to the outside of the heels of that runner. Mr. Nelson, Star Of The Seas and Royal Treen were held up for runs in the early part of the straight. When questioned concerning the performance of 5 th placegetter, Youhadyourwarning, trainer's representative Mr P. Snowden and rider C. Brown stated that they were not particularly disappointed with the run because although today the mare had not shown the same dash as it did at its last start win at Rosehill Gardens on 23 March, on that occasion there had been five weeks between runs. Mr Snowden added that Youhadyourwarning is being trained for longer distances and it had not been surprising that the mare did not put the same dash into its finishing effort today, however, he was pleased that the horse had worked to the line solidly. A post-race veterinary examination of Youhadyourwarning revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken. B. Cooper (Big Bal Bowski) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that she permitted her mount to shift in approaching the first turn resulting in Borelli being taken in and causing Restless to be checked and taken in onto the hindquarters of Royal Treen, which was crowded. After taking into account that B. Cooper had not incurred a careless riding suspension since 1997 a four meeting penalty was issued. Consequently, B. Cooper's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday 15 April 2002 and to expire on Saturday 27 April 2002 on which day she may ride.

RACE 5: NTG All-Aged Stakes 1600m:

Let's Compromise shifted out at the start taking Osca Warrior out onto Kingsgate. Near the 1200m as Mowerman (C. Brown) commenced to cross, Cent Home improved quickly to the inside of the heels of that runner, which resulted in El Mirada being taken in onto Tears Royal. C. Brown was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Osca Warrior raced fiercely throughout the middle stages. On two occasions rounding the first turn Cent Home, which was inclined to hang out, had to be checked off the heels of Sunline.

RACE 6: AJC Australian Oaks 2400m:

The start was delayed when Pirouettes required farrier attention behind the barriers. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Vapour Trail was displaying mild respiratory distress. A swab sample was taken. G. Boss (Republic Lass) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that he shifted out near the 300m when insufficiently clear of Sixty Seconds resulting in Sixty Seconds losing its rightful running and having to be checked. G. Boss's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 14 April 2002 and to expire on Thursday 2 May 2002 on which day he may ride. G. Boss was fined $10,000.

RACE 7: Hotel Inter-Continental Hall Mark Stakes 1200m:

Polygram was examined behind the barriers and passed fit to start. Newquay was slow to begin. Palladium Star and Spectatorial made contact on a number of occasions shortly after the start. Passing the 900m Ra Eclipse raced tight between Varicool and Spectatorial, which shifted in slightly. Fouardee was unable to obtain clear running until near the 100m.Varicool did not obtain clear running at any stage in the straight.

RACE 8: Princesses Welcome Handicap 1600m:

Paris Heartbeat began awkwardly. Near the 900m Paris Heartbeat had to be checked off the heels of Straight Back and shifted out inconveniencing Raymon. Shortly after entering the straight Straight Back was severely checked when crowded for room by Paris Heartbeat, which was taken in by Raymon (C. Munce), which hung in. C. Munce was advised to ensure that he makes every effort to prevent his mounts from shifting ground. Bedouin was held up for a run until passing the 200m. When questioned why he had not attempted to shift out and improve near the 500m on Specialist when Xantra improved to his outside, G. Boss agreed with the Stewards that he had erred in not shifting out at that stage but added that he had been reluctant to do so because he had covered ground throughout the raced on Specialist, which was carrying 58½kgs, and raced best when held up for a sprint. He stated that when Xantra improved quickly to his outside he had anticipated following that runner but was unable to do so when Xantra then commenced to struggle. Specialist was then held up for a clear run until near the 100m. G. Boss was reprimanded and advised that he lacked judgment at a vital stage of the race. C. Munce (Raymon) was fined $100 for presenting his saddle with the incorrect saddlecloth (LR57).
