Rosehill Gardens Saturday 20 April 2002: Race 7 BAC Systems
Handicap 1400m
The Stewards today concluded an inquiry opened on Saturday
20 April 2002 into Mark de Montfort's ride on Storm Zero when further evidence was taken
from Mark de Montfort and evidence was taken from Betting Steward Mr T. Griffin. At the
earlier inquiry the Stewards accepted evidence from the owners of Storm Zero of
substantial betting support for that runner. Today M. de Montfort was again questioned
over his riding over the final 600m. He stated that rounding the home turn Xantra, which
had improved to his outside, was travelling too strongly for him to endeavour to shoulder
out, and though he endeavoured to follow up 2nd placegetter, Magic Heights, in the early
part of the straight and was at all times riding his mount along hands and heels, Storm
Zero had not accelerated as he anticipated. When questioned as to why he took hold near
the 200m, M. de Montfort stated that at that point Xantra shifted in and he had called out
to its rider, C. Brown. He was again obliged to stop riding over the final 50m when held
up as Magic Heights and Xantra both shifted ground. Mr Griffin gave the Stewards a
detailed report of betting transactions around Australia on the BAC Systems Handicap,
which did not indicate any particular weighting that was of concern to the Stewards. At
the conclusion of the inquiry M. de Montfort was told that, in the opinion of the
Stewards, in the circumstances his riding in the early part of the straight had lacked the
necessary vigour. He was further informed that when he took hold briefly at the 200m those
actions appeared overly tentative. M. de Montfort was advised further that his ride had
caused concern to the Stewards and that he must ride his mounts in such a manner so as to
leave no room for doubt. M. de Montfort was reprimanded and told that in similar
circumstances he would be expected to display more vigour and initiative than he did on
this occasion.
Hawkesbury Sunday 21 April 2002: Race 5 Windsor R.S.L.
Sub-Branch ANZAC Memorial Class 1 & Maiden Plate 2000m
The Stewards concluded an inquiry into the reason for
M. Newnham being dislodged from Ultimus near the 400m. After initially taking evidence
from M. de Montfort (Geearco), C. Munce (Phorcys), P. Losh (Mezdorf), D. Beasley (Cyclone
Corsica) and App. S. Pollard (Rolling Thunder) the Stewards today interviewed M. Newnham
and found that near the 400m, as Ultimus improved to the outside of Rolling Thunder,
Rolling Thunder hung out and away from Beatnik, which had improved to that horse's inside.
As a consequence, Ultimus clipped the heels of Rolling Thunder, blundered badly and
dislodged M. Newnham. In the circumstances the Stewards did not attribute the incident to
rider error.

show any early speed and in his view was looking for additional ground. A post-race
veterinary examination of Red Chequer revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken.
When questioned as to why he allowed Master Maestro to improve around him passing the

to go wide at that stage of the race and elected to wait to get a run through the field,
which eventuated shortly after straightening.
